Most jobs are boring and mundane but they used to pay better.

It is clearly apparent you don't have a clue about what the diagnostic computer does on a modern EFI outboard or even newer cars. There are a shitload of things only the dealers system will do. You can't even find the door button code on a Ford without having the computer or taking it apart to get at the module and hope you can read the number off the sticker. There is an old "cracked" (1.33) version of the Yamaha YDIS system out there but it won't work on newer outboards, nor will your OBDII scanner (on any of them).

My point exactly. If you are going to a tire store or a muffler shop, you better need tires or mufflers. The chance that they have a decent test machine or competent mechanic is nil. There is exactly ONE real shop within 20 miles of me and it is still not like going to the dealer for anything more serious than replacing a sensor or doing a brake job.

Most shops here use Napa, not the consumer type shops and dealers ONLY get parts from the dealer network. I think it may even be in their contracts. I assume they can buy rags and hand cleaner from Advance Auto or a similar place but every part, drop of oil, anti freeze or grease will have the manufacturer's name on it. When I had the timing belt put in my Honda I paid something like $20 a gallon for Honda antifreeze and that was 50% water. (AKA premixed, ready to use)

He got a "wall job". His car was parked against the wall for 2 weeks 6 days and 23 hours. Boat dealers are worse than that. They can sit on your boat for 2 or 3 weeks for a $300 oil change. (along with selling you a bunch of stuff you didn't need)

Back when I was working it was amazing to watch the people at Wendys or really any store try to make change if the register was down. My job at the time wasn't really to fix the register, it was to fix the process of fixing the register but you have to watch them to get the gravity of the situation. People some even with college, like the managers, still could not break a $50.

But still have monkeys actually handing you the food, particular at the drive thrus.

And neither of those are good well paying jobs anyway.

There are still manned checkouts everywhere there are self checkouts and there is a person supervising the self checkouts and checkout monkeys have never been good well paying jobs anyway even when it's the owner of the store running the checkout.

No it doesn’t. There are just as many good well paying jobs as there have ever been most obviously with medical services, retail, small business and design. Have a look at the number apple, google, facebook, microsoft etc etc etc employ sometime.

While at one time the industry attempted to replace loads of people with automats, the customers didn’t like them much and continued to patronise the operations that used people instead. In spades with many industrys like hair dressing etc.

Anyone with even half a clue uses an OBD2 thing for anything non obvious.

It isnt a problem when the register does it.

I havent been silly enough to pay for anything with cash at a supermarket for decades.

As a dealer service manager for ten years we bought a LOT of parts from Napa, and sourced all our own fluids. We worked on more than Toyotas - or we would have gone broke!!! We had to use "factory" parts on any vehicle under warranty - and we used mostly "factory" parts on all Toyotas. We used a fair bit of "factory" parts from other dealers on other vehicles too - but we STILL gave NAPA a pretty good cheque every month - along with Monarch Oil, Battery Wholesale, speedy brake and clutch (NOT Speedy Muffler) Twin City Auto parts, Automotive Trade Supply, and a few other local suppliers. I had 6 bays to keep busy - with 2 pretty much occupied by cleanup and prep - and hand car-wash.

The 4 service bays all had inground hoists - For 8 of my 10 years our 3 year running retention rate was significantly over 100% - and our absorption rate was generally 113% plus.

For any of you guys who know the business you KNOWwhat that means.

My daughter and son-on-law own a Regal Commodore 402 so I know it well. Thankfully he's a truck mechanic so he can do a lot of it himself - and I pitch in and help with some of the diagnostics too.

Good thought about the door lock -- I have no klew; can't think of a time I've ever locked it. :) Altho I suppose it has been once or twice in the 15+ yr I've had it, I couldn't come close to guessing how long ago the last time might have been...

Those will be good paying jobs just as soon as the $ 15 an hour minimum wage bill passes.. ha ha..

Actually, after I wrote the last I remembered that a young clerk at the local Ace Hdwe actually counted out change properly and thinking at the time how unusual it was. I presume she must have been a DECA student.

That's always been the case and few factory jobs are anything like good jobs.

That number is only double the number of unemployed, still single digit % of the workforce. There will always be far more non good jobs than good well paid jobs.

Many of whom are pretty selective about what work they choose to do when they can put their hand out to the state for an income that provides them with a very adequate standard of living with the only real downside being the number of gang bangers and drug dealers and addicts around them.

F*ck all newer cars ever need anyone to use one of those on the car.

But f*ck all newer car owners ever need them to do that on their car.

F*ck all need to do that either.
