A bit OT: Before locks?

I had a nightmare last night where I lost all my keys. This brought to mind, what did people do to secure their doors before locks and keys were invented (by Yale?)? The rich of course had guards. Poor people like me watch dogs? And before dogs were invented, guard T-Rexes? Or just trusted all their honest fellow human beings? Ken

I do know a country gentle man who had that kind of moment. Pieces of equipment go missing and show back up again.
