Thoughts on the 'correct' way vs. just getting a project finished?

I’m currently stuck in this loop where every minor repair on my old place feels like it requires a PhD. I started out just wanting to repoint some stone walls, but two hours in, I was reading heated debates about the geological origins of the stones and Roman masonry techniques. People act like the whole house will crumble if I don't account for the angle of the sun or prevailing winds while the mix cures. It’s honestly exhausting trying to find a middle ground when everyone online has a "my way or the highway" attitude about even the tiniest tasks. Now I’m staring at a cracked concrete pad for my shed and considering self-leveler, but the conflicting advice is allready starting up again. One guy says it’s a weekend project, another says I’m basically committing architectural malpractice if I don't check the soil density. At what point do you just stop reading and actually pick up a tool? I’m curious if you guys have a rule of thumb for when to ignore the purists and just get the job done so you can move on to the next thing on the list.

I get the appeal of the 'just do it' approach, but have you ruled out the root cause of the cracking? If that pad is sitting on expansive clay or there’s a drainage issue, self-leveler is just a temporary band-aid that’ll pop off during the first freeze.

You're right on the money with the resurfacer, but one tiny thing—make sure you hit that old slab with a pressure washer or at least a stiff broom and some water first. Update: I took the advice to just pressure wash the pad and go for it. It felt great to actualy move my arms instead of a mouse. But now I can't stop thinking about that warning regarding the expansive clay underneath. If the self-leveler does pop off after winter, what’s the next step? Is there a way to test the soil myself without hiring a pro?
