Just finished a 24"x 36" wall panel for a client's office in LA and went with a Sage Green UHPC mix. I did a light acid etch and finished it with a matte sealer to make the faceted, geometric pattern really stand out. We used a French cleat system for the mounting wich is always a lifesaver, but I'm still trying to figure out if this is the best way to go for high-end decor. This project was about $1800 once you factor in the shipping, and it's got me wondering if UHPC is overkill for something that's just hanging on a wall. Would GFRC be just as good, or does the extra density and finish of UHPC actually add enugh value to justify the price? I'm curious what you guys think about the cost-to-benefit ratio when it comes to custom interior pieces like this. Are clients mostly paying for the look, or does the material tech really matter to them?

In my shop, I usally stick to a standard GFRC mix with some Forton VF-774 for interior decorative pieces like that. At 24"x36", you're looking at a manageable weight even at a 3/4" thickness, and the surface quality is usually more than enough for a client's office. If you're hitting $1800 for a single panel once shipping is factored in, you're definitely pushing into a luxury tier where the material story matters as much as the aesthetic.
The main reason I’d opt for a UHPC like Ductal or a high-performance Buddy Rhodes blend would be if those geometric facets have extremely sharp, thin edges that might chip during demolding or while being crated. UHPC gives that extra insurance for those crisp lines. Most of my clients in high-end residential don't actually know the technical specs, but they do notice the "feel" of the density when they touch it. That said, if you can achieve that Sage Green look with a face coat and a GFRC backer for half the material cost, it’s hard to justify the extra spend on the mix unless the geometry is so thin it would crack otherwise.
acutally, I have to disagree on the GFRC swap. For those sharp, geometric facets you mentioned, GFRC can be a nightmare beacuse you often get pinholes or 'shadowing' from the fiber layers right at the peaks of the pattern. I’ve been using a custom UHPC blend with some Buddy Rhodes ingredients for high-end residential work, and the flowability is what makes the $1800 price tag justifiable. You can pour it almost like milk, and it captures every single detail of the mold without needing alot of vibration or heavy backer coats.
When you're shipping to a place like LA, the weight savings from going thinner—like 1/2" instead of 3/4" or 1"—relly adds up. If you tried to pull off a 1/2" panel in GFRC, you'd be worried about it snapping during the French cleat installation or in transit. With UHPC, the matrix is so dense that it feels like polished stone rather than just cast concrete. High-end clients can feel that difference when they touch the edges. They aren't just paying for the look; they’re paying for somthing that feels premium and technically superior to a standard mix.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the basics, but does that extra density make the UHPC panel way heavier than GFRC? I'd be terrified of it pulling off the wall. Does the French cleat need to be special for somthing that expensive and heavy? Also, does the acid etch finish you mentioned react differently with the UHPC? I’m realy intrested in trying colors like that Sage Green, but I don't know if the material choice changes how the final color looks once the sealer hits it. Still learning the ropes here!
If you want that UHPC finish without the nightmare cost, you need to start using Trinic TEC-10. It’s an admixture that basically bridges the gap between GFRC and UHPC, giving you those razor-sharp edges and high density while still being workable. I’ve found that it reacts beautifully with light acid etches, especially with greens and greys. For the hanging part, don't overthink the weight—just swap the wood cleats for Monarch Z-Clips. They’re low profile and can handle the extra density of a high-performance mix easily. It keeps the high-end look without the fear of it crashing down.
