Thoughts on these massive data center builds vs trade longevity?

I’ve been seeing alot of these humongous data center projects going up lately, and while the union scale and the overtime are great, I’ve been thinking about what they actualy represent. We’re out there laying miles of conduit and setting massive chillers for facilities that are designed to run with almost no people inside once the keys are handed over. It’s wierd to think that the more of these we build, the more we’re basially centralizing everthing into automated systems. Do you think we're eventually just working ourselves out of a job by building the infrastructure that's meant to replace us? I had a conversation with a foreman the other day who said we're basically building our own replacements, one server rack at a time. Maybe that’s just how progress works and there will always be somthing else to build, but I'm curious if anyone else feels a bit conflicted about it. Is the boom in tech construction actually a win for the trades in the long run, or are we just helping the big players phase us out?


I spent most of last year pulling four-inch rigid and setting 3000kVA transformers for a massive cloud facility out in the desert. I get that feeling when you look at a finished floor that’s just quiet humming and blinking lights. But honestly, I look at it as job security. These things are high-maintenace divas compared to a standard warehouse or office block. The tech inside has a shelf life of maybe five years. I’ve allready been back to a site we finished in 2019 to rip out perfectly good racks and upgrade the Liebert cooling units becasue the new chips run so much hotter. We aren't just building a structure; we’re building a machine that needs constant mechanical and electrical evolution. Every time they 'automate' a new process, it requires more power density and more fiber, wich means more work for us. If anything, the complexity is what keeps us relevant. A computer can’t snake a drain or troubleshoot a short in a tray of Cat6a that’s been crushed. As long as they keep building these massive heat-generating boxes, they’re going to need guys with tools to keep the lights on.

I see it differently. The real issue isn't what these buildings do once they’re live, but how we’re being forced to put them together. On the last two hyperscale jobs I did, we weren't really 'building' in the traditional sense. Everything from the UPS rooms to the CRAC units showed up on pre-terminated skids. We used to take pride in the layout and the precision of the conduit runs, but now it’s all about speed and modularity. When you’re just bolting together pre-fab components from a kit, the actual craft starts to disappear. I’m seeing guys who can barely use a bender because the job calls for miles of wire basket and factory-made offsets. It’s not the servers that are going to put us out of work; it’s the fact that we’re turning the trades into an assembly line. Once the process is simplified enough that any kid with a wrench can slap it together, the wages and the demand for real experience are going to tank, regardless of how much maintenance those servers need later on.

Seen it all before. Back in the day we’d spend weeks hand-bending pipe and sweating every copper joint for a factory that’d stand for fifty years. Now these data halls are just big Legos. Sure, they’re 'automated,' but I’ve seen enought 'smart' systems fail to know a human still has to climb the ladder when the sensors go haywire. We aren't being phased out, we're just becoming high-priced janitors for expensive silicon. As long as they keep chasing the next big thing, there's a paycheck in it for us to fix thier over-engineered messes.

This is all pretty over my head since I'm just starting out, but the 'high-priced janitor' thing realy stuck with me. If these buildings are basially like big machines or Legos now, does that mean you guys have to learn a lot more about computers and programming too? I always thougt construction was mostly about the physical labor, but are you having to get certified in tech stuff just to keep up with the maintenace on those cooling units?

Spot on about the high-priced janitor angle, but one thing people overlook is the specialized fire suppression systems these halls need now. You aren't just plumbing a standard wet system; we're installing complex pre-action and clean agent setups like FM-200 or Novec 1230. Those systems are incredibly finicky and require alot of precise calibration and recurring testing that a server script can't handle. Even if the rest of the build feels like Legos, the life safety side is getting way more technical and labor-intensive.

Update: Hearing that even these smart systems fail and still need a guy on a ladder makes me feel better about the long run. But that 'big Legos' point really stuck with me—it feels like the craft is disappearing when everythign arrives pre-terminated. Are you guys seeing this modular stuff taking over smaller jobs too, or just the massive hyperscale projects?
