Thoughts on 80s longevity vs modern appliance reliability?

I’ve been thinking alot about how my old gear seems to outlast the stuff I bought just a couple of years ago. I still have an old Commodore 64 in the basement that boots up every single time without a hitch, but my GE front-loader just had its control board die after only thirty months. It feels like we might have traded actual durability for fancy sensors and energy ratings. Is it just a matter of complexity? Back in the 80s, things were simpler, so maybe there was just less that coud go wrong. Now, if one tiny component on a motherboard fails, the whole machine is basicly a brick. I’m curious if people think this is intentional or just the price we pay for modern efficiency. Do you think we're acutally making progress, or are we just generating more landfill waste? I’d love to hear if anyone has found modern brands that actually rival that old-school build quality. Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but it's frustrating when the 'smart' features are the first things to break.


I remember taking apart my dad's old Kenmore from the late 80s. everythign was mechanical—timers, actual copper wiring, and heavy-duty switches. If a part failed, you coud literally see the burnt contact and fix it with a bit of sandpaper or a cheap replacement part. Today, my Bosch dishwasher uses surface-mount components on a proprietary PCB coated in resin. When a $2 capacitor pops, you can't just solder a new one on; the manufacturer wants you to swap the entire $300 module.

It’s not just the complexity, it’s the shift to value engineering. We’ve moved away from leaded solder wich was more flexible and less prone to tin whiskers or cracking under heat cycles. Modern ROHS compliance is better for the enviroment in the long run, but those lead-free joints in high-heat areas like an oven control board just don't have the same lifespan. We’re defintely trading longevity for efficiency, and it's frustrating when a machine is mechanically sound but totaled becasue of a software glitch or a fried sensor.

I disagree that the old stuff was strictly better. My parents’ 1985 Maytag was built like a tank, sure, but it used 40 gallons of water per load and chewed up every delicate shirt I owned. I remember the noise—it sounded like a freight train in the kitchen. Modern machines like my LG WashTower use a fraction of the electricity and water, and my clothes actually last longer because the drum movement is more precise.

People forget how much we paid for that "durability" back then. Adjusted for inflation, a high-end fridge in 1984 cost double what a feature-packed Samsung or KitchenAid costs now. We’re essentially getting higher performance for less money upfront. If I have to replace a control board every seven or eight years, I’m still coming out ahead on utility bills and the initial purchase price. The modern sensors aren't just fluff; the load balancing tech keeps the machine from shaking itself apart, wich actually protects the mechanical parts from the kind of vibration damage that used to kill older units.

You’re overlooking the death of serviceability in the chassis itself. Look at the old Whirlpool-built Kenmore 110 series—you coud pop the cabinet off in thirty seconds with a flathead. Now, if the bearings go on a Samsung WF45T6000AW, you're looking at a welded plastic outer tub that’s a total loss. It’s not just the boards; it’s the mechanical assembly. Even the high-end Miele W1 units are getting harder to DIY. If you want that 80s longevity today, you basicly have to buy a Speed Queen TC5 with the mechanical transmission, otherwise, you're just renting a disposable computer that happens to wash clothes.

I'm realy new to all this, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but is there any middle ground? I had no idea about the 'welded tubs' thing, that sounds like a nightmare for the enviornment. Are there still brands that use the older mechanical styles, or has everyone switched to those circuit boards that are impossible to fix? I just want a washer that won't die in three years, but I don't want to ruin my clothes either. Does anyone acutally make a 'simple' machine anymore, or is that just not allowed with the new energy laws?

On a totally diffrent note, since we're talking about that era, does anyone remember those old-school 'wood grain' stickers they used to put on everythign like VCRs and stereos? Do you think that acutally helped protect the casings from scratches, or was it just for the look? I'd love to find a modern dishwasher that looks like a tree!
