My new high-efficiency dryer takes about 75 minutes for a heavy load of jeans, whereas my old one blasted them dry in 40. I got fed up with the "smart" junk and swapped my set for a Speed Queen TC5 top loader. It has a real agitator, no lid lock, and it actualy finishes a load in 30 minutes like the old days. It doesn't care about being high-efficiency or saving a thimble of water; it just cleans.
If you want that 20-year lifespan back, skip the big box brands and look at thier commercial-grade stuff. It’s the only way to avoid the plastic gearboxes and sensor headaches.
Have you ruled out your venting? I felt the same way when I got my new LG, but it turned out my old ductwork was about 50% clogged with lint that the old dryer just blasted trough with sheer heat. The newer sensors are way more sensitive to airflow restrictions and will throttle the heat to protect the motor.
Also, are you sure you aren't just stuck in the 'Eco' presets? Most modern machines default to the most restrictive settings to hit those energy ratings. If you've tried a manual 'Timed Dry' on high heat and it's still taking forever, then yeah, maybe it's a lemon. But usually, it's either the pipes or the programming.
