Thoughts on DIY-ing it vs. calling a contractor for the small stuff?

I finally stopped staring at the sticker shock from my contractor's quote and decided to swap out my old bathroom vanity myself last weekend. Honestly, the plumbing part had me sweating, but after a few hours of watching tutorials and two frantic trips back to the hardware store for a specific P-trap and some plumber's tape, I actualy got it done. It’s not perfect, but it works and it looks way better than the dated one that was there when we moved in. Now that I’ve got that win, I’m looking at the rest of the house and wondering if I shold just keep DIY-ing everthing or if some things are truly better left to the pros. Is it better to just jump into the deep end with things like tiling or electrical, or is that just asking for a disaster? I’d love to hear what project first gave you guys the confidence to stop calling for help every time something broke. Or maybe there's a project you did yourself that made you realize you'd rather just pay someone next time?


My first real win was swapping out a crusty old thermostat for an Ecobee. I was terrified of blowing a fuse or frying the HVAC board, but matching the colored wires was simpler than I expected. That small victory gave me the guts to try tiling the kitchen backsplash a month later.

I bought those classic 3x6 white subway tiles and rented a wet saw from the local hardware store. I spent hours obsessing over 1/8 inch spacers and making sure the first row was perfectly level. It took me three days instead of the one day a pro quoted, and my knees were killing me by the end. That project taught me that I can handle the aesthetic stuff, but I still draw the line at heavy electrical or moving load-bearing walls. Tiling is definitly somthing you can do if you have the patience for the mess and the constant measuring, but don't expect your back to thank you. Just take it slow and don't be afraid to buy extra tile for when you inevitably mess up a cut.

I had the opposite realization after I tried to refinish the red oak floors in my 1940s bungalow. I figured renting a heavy-duty drum sander from Home Depot for $80 a day whould save me thousands. Instead, I ended up with deep, permanent gouges in the wood beacuse I didn't respect how much torque those machines have. It took three extra days of grueling work with a Makita orbital sander just to make it passable, and even now, the ripples are visible when the afternoon sun hits the living room.

That mess taught me that some things are strictly better left to specialists. While swapping a vanity or a faucet is one thing, anything involving high-stakes finishes or specialized equipment carries a massive hidden cost if you mess up. Now, I limit my DIY work to mechanical tasks—fixing a running toilet or swapping a light switch. For anything that requires a proffesional finish, like level-5 drywall or hardwood sanding, I’d rather work overtime at my actual job to pay a craftsman than risk ruining a major part of my home again. Sometimes the most expensive way to do a project is to try doing it yourself first.

Backsplashes are definately the way to go for a first big win. One detail that usually gets overlooked is checking if the wall is actually flat. If your drywall has a slight bow, those flat subway tiles will "lippage" and stick out at the corners. I found that using a slightly thicker layer of thin-set in the low spots helps level everthing out. Also, definitely pick up a high-quality rubber grout float; the cheap plastic ones just make a mess and leave your joints looking uneven.

Glad you got that vanity in, but don't let it go to your head. My first 'aha' moment was re-packing a brass faucet stem with graphite string back in the 70s—none of these easy-swap cartridges they sell now. We didn't have tutorials, just a greasy copy of a Reader's Digest DIY manual.

If you try electrical, remember: black to brass or you'll lose your mass. Stay away from those back-stab terminals on cheap outlets; they're junk. Take the extra thirty seconds to wrap the wire around the screw. Your house will thank you when it’s not smoldering.
