I’ve been trying to figure out a better way to haul my gear around without everthing just sliding all over the bed of my truck. Right now, I’ve got my miter saw and my compressor just sitting in the back and it's a mess. I’m thinking about building one of those drawer systems out of plywood, but those heavy-duty rails are so expensive. Like, five hundred bucks for a pair? That’s more than the wood costs. I’ve seen some guys mention using birch plywood for the bottom and just letting it slide wood-on-wood. Does that actualy hold up when you’ve got a heavy generator or a bunch of tools in there? I’m worried about it getting stuck or grinding down over time, especally if a bit of sawdust gets in the gaps. I'm planning on painting it and maybe using some bed liner to keep the moisture out, but I don't want to regret skipping the rails six months from now. If anyone has experience with the "no-rail" setup, let me know if it's actually smooth or just a pain in the neck.

I've been running a wood-on-wood drawer setup for over eighteen months now and it holds up surprisingly well if you prep the surfaces right. You don't need those five-hundred-dollar slides to get a smooth draw, even with a miter saw or a heavy compressor sitting on top. The trick isn't just using birch plywood; it's about reducing the friction points. Instead of letting the entire bottom of the drawer rub, I glued down some **UHMW plastic strips** (ultra-high-molecular-weight) on the carcass floor. It's basically like sliding your drawers on ice, and it doesn't care about sawdust. If you want to stick strictly to wood, sand the bottom of the drawers and the runner tracks down to 220 grit and rub them both down with a block of **paraffin wax** or even an old candle. It creates a slick barrier that prevents the wood fibers from grabbing each other. Since you mentioned painting it, just make sure you don't paint the actual contact points where the drawer slides. Paint on paint will get gummy and stick the second it gets warm outside, wich is exactly the headache you're trying to avoid.

One must also account for the inevitable dimensional instability of plywood in an unconditioned enviroment like a truck bed, where humidity fluctuations cause the drawer sides to expand against the carcass walls. To mitigate this without those exorbitant steel slides, I recommend a longitudinal 'guide rail' design—essentially a central rib on the floor—wich minimizes lateral surface contact and prevents binding when the material swells during humid months. Also, ensure you use a high-quality polyurethane glue for your joinery, as the constant vibration from the truck's suspension will eventually fatigue standard PVA glue in a heavy wood-on-wood configuration.
