We're working on this massive concrete monolith wall today and I've run into a bit of a logistics nightmare with the HVAC chase. The gap is so tight that we can't get a good angle on the lower ties from the top or the sides. My lead hand joked about just dangling me by my ankles into the formwork to reach the bottom, but I'm honestly starting to think that's the only way we're getting those ties secured before the pour tomorrow morning. The rebar is already tied in so thick that there's barely enought room to breathe, let alone maneuver a tool down there. I'm worried about the stability of the forms if we keep leaning over them like this. Has anyone ever dealt with a chase this narrow where you literally can't reach the hardware? I relly don't want to end up upside down in a steel cage just to finish a simple tie-off. Is there some kind of extension tool or a specific trick for these deep chases that doesn't involve defying gravity? I feel like I'm missing somthing obvious, but the guys on site are just laughing and telling me to get my boots in the air. Any advice on how to handle this safely would be great becasue my back is already killing me from trying to reach.

You need to stop leaning over the formwork before you either blow your back out or end up falling in head-first. If you can't reach those lower ties with a standard tie wire twister, your best bet is to fabricate a custom extension tool using a length of 1/2-inch EMT or a piece of small-diameter rebar. Weld a hook to the end of it or duct tape a pair of long-nose pliers to the pole if you're in a pinch. It’s a common trick for deep chases where the rebar cage is already closed up and you've got no lateral access. Another option is to use a magnetic nut driver on a long extension if you're dealing with snap-ties and wedges. If the gap is truly too narrow for even an extension, you might have to pull a few of those horizontal rebar pieces out to create a window, secure your ties, and then slide the bars back into place. It’s a pain to re-tie the steel, but it's a hell of a lot safer than dangling by your ankles like your lead hand is suggesting. Don't let them pressure you into the **inverted man method** because once you're upside down in a steel cage, you lose all your leverage and your blood pressure spikes instantly. If they absolutely insist on someone going down there, it needs to be a proper confined space setup with a harness and a mechanical retrieval system like a tripod. Anything less is just asking for a workplace injury that won't be funny when someone actually gets stuck or hurt. Check if you can access the ties from the exterior of the form by drilling small pilot holes for the tie wire and pulling them through from the outside using a pull-string. It takes a bit longer to set up, but it keeps everyone’s feet on the ground. Tell your crew that a **mechanical extension** is the only way this is getting done safely before the pour tomorrow morning.
Forget the custom EMT junk, just grab a pair of Knipex 28 81 280 Long Reach Needle Nose pliers. Those 45-degree angled tips are a lifesaver when you are trying to fish wire trough a tight chase. I had a similar nightmare on a bridge deck last year and those pliers were the only thing that kept me from having to climb inside.
If the gap is realy that deep, you might want to look into the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Rebar Tier. It is expensive, but it beats a trip to the ER becuase you fell into a cage. Keep your feet on the ground and let the tool do the reaching.
I'm pretty new to this, so maybe this is a dumb question, but how do you actualy use those long-reach pliers if you can't even see what you're grabbing? If the rebar is as thick as you say, are you guys using like a flashlight or a mirror on a stick to find the tie? I'm barely getting the hang of a regular twister, so the idea of making a custom tool out of EMT sounds like somthing I'd defintely mess up. Is there a specific brand of extension that's ready to go out of the box for beginners?
I’m curious if you’ve ruled out the possibility that the formwork layout itself is just slightly out of plumb? If the gap is that much tighter than expected, sometimes shimming the top walers out an inch can give you just enough clearance to get a standard tool down there. I’d be worried that even if you manage to hook the tie with an extension, you won’t get enough torque to actually secure it properly against the pressure of the pour. Have you double-checked the spacers to make sure the rebar cage hasn't shifted and pinned itself against the interior face?
