Thoughts on homeowner prep vs contractor duty for attic insulation?

I recently had a crew come out to blow in some cellulose insulation, but now I’m second-guessing the whole project. They were supposed to handle the air sealing and prep, but I had to stay on them just to get the baffles and mesh installed correctly. When I went up to the attic this morning to check their work, I found an open junction box with wires and nuts just sitting there, totally buried under the fresh fill. It’s a bit worrying because I have no idea how many other boxes might be hidden under a foot of paper now. I really thought the inspection they did beforehand would have caught things like open boxes, but I guess I’m wondering where the line is. Is it normally the homeowner's job to ensure every electrical box is capped and covered before the insulators arrive, or should a pro crew be spotting that stuff as they go? I’m torn between digging through the attic to find more potential hazards or just trusting that it’s probably fine. What do you guys think about the balance of responsibility here? I’d appreciate any perspective on whether I should be calling them back out or just getting a ladder and a bucket of covers myself.

I didn't want to be the one itching for a week because I had to crawl through the loose-fill to fix thier mistake. You definately shouldn't just leave it. If you have a circuit trip later, you'll never find that box without making a huge mess. Call them back and tell them they need to locate any hidden boxes and install proper covers or extensions so they sit above the insulation level. It’s their liability.

I've done a few attic blow-ins with the rental machines from Home Depot, and honestly, expecting an insulation crew to audit your wiring is asking for trouble. Those guys are paid by the square foot and thier goal is to get that Applegate or Owens Corning product in as fast as possable. Instead of calling them back to dig trough a foot of cellulose, I'd just grab a headlamp and some flags yourself. Find the boxes you know about, cap them, and stick a marker up so the next guy doesn't have to hunt for them. It’s more about future maintenace than an immediate fire hazard, as long as the wire nuts were tight to begin with.

Man, that’s a total nightmare. I’ve seen this way too often with those quick crews. If you’re worried about more hidden ones, maybe grab a thermal camera. Sometimes you can spot the heat from the boxes trough the fluff if there’s a load on the circuit. Even if they aren't electricians, they shouldn’t just bury stuff that’s clearly a hazard. It’s common sense. I’d make ‘em come back and hunt ‘em down. You don’t wanna be digging through that dusty mess yourself—it’s nasty and you’ll just end up itchy for days.

The fundamental issue here isn't just the fire hazard, but rather the blatant disregard for NEC 314.29 requirements regarding accessibility, as any junction box buried under a foot of loose-fill without a permanent marker or an extension ring effectively becomes an inaccessible phantom that will haunt you during future troubleshooting. When I did my own attic, I meticulously installed 1x2 furring strips as flags at every box location, becasue expecting a production-oriented insulation crew to possess the electrical literacy required to identify an open 4-square box amidst the chaotic workflow of a blow-in is unfortunately optimistic in today's labor market.

I’m super curious if they actualy help with heat or if they just make it harder to get an even layer of cellulose around the cans!

Look, burying boxes is bush league. When I spec’d my last R-49 job using SANCTUARY by GreenFiber, I spent the morning before they arrived flagging everything. I used 4-foot neon marking stakes taped to the side of every J-box so there was zero excuse. If you’re calling them back, don't just let them rake it flat. Make them throw on some Arlington BES1 box extenders. It brings the opening up to the new grade so you aren't hunting for screws in the dust. A pro crew should know better, but in this economy, you’re the QC manager. If it’s not flagged, it’s getting buried.
