Saw a heavy-duty yellow extension cord setup today that had a male-to-male connection sitting right in a wet gutter. It looked like an industrial-grade plug, but seeing it basically submerged in muddy water definitely made me do a double take. I’ve always heard these called 'suicide cords' and that they’re a massive no-go, but I’m curious how much of that is strict code talk and how much is common sense for a temporary fix. Is there ever a situation where this kind of setup is actually the most practical way to bridge power on a job site? I'm not an expert by any means, but I’d love to hear from people who actually work with this stuff every day. Do you think the industrial casing makes it safe enough for a quick use, or is the presence of water an automatic dealbreaker regardless of the hardware? It seems like a huge risk to take just to get some power running, but maybe I'm overthinking it. I’d love to know where you guys draw the line between being resourceful and being dangerous. Is it one of those things that’s 'fine until it isn't,' or is there a genuine middle ground?

I’ve seen guys try to justify those widow-makers by using heavy-duty Hubbell twist-locks, thinking the beefier casing makes them magically safe. It doesn't. The real problem isn't just the water in the gutter; it’s that those exposed pins are live the second you plug the other end into a generator or a building outlet. If that connection kicks loose while you’re pulling cable, you've basicly got a hot taser sitting in a puddle.
A few years back, we had a sub try to backfeed a temporary sub-panel using a 12/3 yellow jacket cord with male ends. The GFCI kept tripping beacuse of the moisture, so they just bypassed it. One of the apprentices stepped near the wet area and got a nasty buzz just from the leakage current. There’s relly no middle ground here. If you need to bridge power, spend the twenty minutes to run a proper 50-amp spider box or at least use the right gendered extensions. Being resourceful isn't worth the liability or a trip to the hospital when the hardware is clearly being misused.
I think people get a bit too hung up on the "suicide cord" label without looking at why these show up on actual job sites. When you’re dealing with temporary power distros or massive event rigs, sometimes you end up with a "turnaround" because of how the spider boxes were daisy-chained by a previous crew. If you're running everything through a 50A GFCI-protected hub, the risk profile changes significantly compared to some guy's DIY garage project.
In my experience with stage lighting, we use L5-20 or L6-30 twist-locks that are specifically designed to stay mated. If that connection in the gutter was a sealed industrial twist-lock, it’s alot less likely to just "kick loose" like a standard Edison plug. We’ve had to bridge gaps in a pinch where the alternative was shutting down a whole production. As long as you’ve got a qualified tech who knows the signal flow and ensures the male end isn't hot while it's being handled, it’s a tool like any other. The real danger isn't the cord; it's the lack of a proper breaker or a tech who doesn't understand the circuit.
Don't even get me started on the 'resourceful' excuse. It's ussually just laziness 'cause someone didn't wanna walk back to the truck for the right lead. I saw a guy try this once to power a small pump, and the vibration from the motor actualy shook the male-to-male connection apart. Since it was in a damp area, it started arcing like crazy before it even tripped the breaker. It's never just 'fine til it isn't'—it's a fire hazard waitin' to happen. If you can't find the right cord, you shouldn't be pluggin' it in, period. Why risk your license or your life over a ten-dollar fix?
I learned the hard way that these aren't worth the headache when I tried to backfeed a shed for some lights years ago. I ended up just buying a proper inlet box and wiring it in correctly over a weekend. Once you have the right hardware installed, you never have to play the 'is this gonna kill someone' game. It's way faster to just do the job once than to baby a sketchy setup every time it rains.
