I’ve been watching the red dial on my water meter move about 1/10th of a unit every 15 seconds, and it’s driving me a bit crazy. It’s an older 1960s place, and I’ve already gone through the usual suspects. I replaced a leaky toilet flapper and turned off the furnace humidifier, but the meter is still creeping along. If I shut the main valve, it stops entirely, so the leak is definatly somewhere inside. My in-laws stopped by and told me it’s probably just my iron filtration tank pulling a constant trickle and that I shouldn't worry. I’m pretty skeptical though because I thought those systems only pulled water when they were actually backwashing. Does anyone know if a constant, slow drain from a filter is actually a thing, or am I just wasting money and water? I have an appointment for the 26th, but I’m not sure if this is an emergency or if I can wait. Also, is it socially acceptable to pay a plumber to just walk me through my own house? I’d realy like to have someone explain what all these valves and tanks are for so I can label them and not feel so lost next time.

Your in-laws are mistaken; iron filters and water softeners should only use water during thier scheduled regeneration cycles, usually in the middle of the night. If that red dial is moving, water is physically passing through the meter and going somewhere. A constant trickle like that is often caused by a **stuck piston** or a seal failure inside the control head of the filtration unit. You can verify this by checking the drain line—usually a small plastic tube—that runs from the tank to a floor drain. If you feel a vibration or see water constantly flowing through that line when the unit isn't backwashing, the internal valve is leaking. Even if you replaced one flapper, you might have other ghosts in the pipes. Try the food coloring trick: drop some dye in every toilet tank and wait 30 minutes. If the bowl water changes color without a flush, the seal is still failing. Also, check the **pressure-relief valve** on your water heater. Sometimes they get a bit of scale stuck in them and drip just enough to move a sensitive meter but not enough to leave a noticible puddle. Since the meter stops when you shut the main valve, the leak is 100% inside your system. As for paying a plumber for a walkthrough, that's a great move and very common. Most guys would much rather spend an hour getting paid to explain a system and label valves than crawl through a cramped attic. Just tell them you want a **system orientation**. It will save you a ton of stress later if you ever have a real emergency. The 26th is fine to wait for since this isn't a catastrophic burst, but keep an eye on that drain line from the iron tank in the meantime. If it is a constant flow, you are literally flushing money away every hour.
Spot on about the control head. If you want to be 100% sure it’s the iron filter before the 26th, look for the bypass valve right behind the tank. Usually it's a push-pull lever or a couple of knobs. Flip those to bypass the unit—if the meter stops immediately, you've confirmed the leak is internal to that specific filter's valve assembly.
One other tiny thing to check is your fridge's ice maker or water dispenser. I've seen the solenoid valves on those older units get gunked up and let a tiny, silent stream bypass into the tray or down the internal drain, which is just enough to keep that red dial creeping.
Wow, I never knew you coud acutally pay a plumber just to show you around! I just moved into an older place too and the basement looks like a giant bowl of copper spaghetti with all these mystery pipes going everywhere. I’m defintely going to ask for a system orientation now becuase I’m totally lost. Quick question for the pros though—when you guys label your valves, do you just use a Sharpie right on the pipe or do you buy those fancy hanging plastic tags? I'm worried about the ink rubbing off if the pipes get all sweaty in the summer humidity!
Update: I tried the bypass valve like you suggested and the meter finally stopped! It’s a relief to know it’s just the filter and not a hidden pipe leak. Since it's trickling constantly, does that mean a seal inside the control head is blown? I’m still keeping the appointment for the walk-trough, but has anyone ever tried repairing one of these valves themselves?
