I'm seriously at my limit with this dust situation in my house and I have no idea where it’s coming from anymore. We did a full renovation about two years ago and everthing was fine for the first year, but lately, this greyish-white lint is everywhere. It looks just like stuff you’d pull out of a dryer vent. I acutally replaced the entire dryer duct and stopped using the machine entirely back in November just to rule it out, but the lint keeps showing up anyway. It’s weird becuase it seems to cluster around the bathrooms and the main air return vent right after everyone takes thier morning showers. We’ve had the ducts cleaned twice now and use those high-end MERV filters, but it doesn't help at all. I’ve spent hours vacuuming under the beds and on top of the door frames only for it to come back two days later. I read online that maybe the humidity is making normal dust clump togather into these big balls, but our exhaust fans are working fine. There's no construction nearby either. If anyone has dealt with this kind of mystery lint after a remodel, please let me know what worked because I feel like I'm losing my mind cleaning this up every single day.
Why am I seeing massive lint-like dust piles a year after my renovation?

That greyish-white lint is almost certainly **cellulose insulation** leaking from your attic. If your renovation included blown-in insulation, you're likely dealing with a bypass issue. When you run those bathroom exhaust fans, they create negative pressure in the room. If the contractors didn't properly seal the gaps around your new recessed lights or the **door headers**, the fan is literally sucking air—and insulation—right out of the attic and into your living space.
The reason it shows up specifically after showers is the humidity. The moisture in the air causes those fine cellulose fibers to clump togehter into those dryer lint balls you're seeing. Since it's happening near the air return, the furnace is likely pulling that dusty attic air trough the wall cavities and dumping it right where the suction is strongest. This explains why cleaning the ducts didn't help; you aren't cleaning out old dust, you're constantly importing new material from the ceiling. You need to get up in the attic and look at the areas directly above your bathrooms and the main return. Look for craters in the insulation or areas where the grey stuff looks like it's been disturbed. Check the tops of your interior walls. If they didn't use spray foam to seal the **top plates** where the wires and pipes go through the framing, that is your culprit.
I’d also check the gaps behind your door casing. In alot of full renovations, they pull the trim and don't bother foaming the gap between the jamb and the rough opening. If that gap is open to the wall cavity, and the wall cavity is open to the attic, you've got a constant stream of dust coming in every time the HVAC kicks on. It’s a tedious fix, but you have to seal those air leaks with canned foam or caulk to stop the flow.
I never realized the gap behind the door casing could be a highway for attic dust. I’m a total newbie, but I’ve noticed a wierd breeze around my closet door whenever the AC kicks on. Could that be the same thing? If I pull the trim off to look, should I be looking for actual holes or just any space between the wood and the wall? Also, is there a specific foam I should use so I don't accidentally warp the door frame while trying to seal it up? I’d hate to fix a dust problem only to have a door that won’t shut.
To answer that question about the foam, make sure you specifically get "window and door" low-expansion spray foam. If you use the high-expansion stuff, it can actually bow your door jambs and then your door won't shut right. I had a similar issue with a pocket door after our remodel—the cavity was basically a chimney for attic dust.
Check the header especally; contractors often skip sealing that horizontal gap above the door. If you hold a lighter or some incense near the trim when the HVAC is on, you'll see the flame flicker right where the air is pulling trough. Any gap at all is a potential leak.
If you're not ready to rip off all your trim yet, try the incense stick trick. Light one and run it slowly around the perimeter of your door frames and the header while the HVAC or bathroom fan is running. You’ll see the smoke get sucked right into the gaps where the dust is coming trough. I found a massive leak behind my master bathroom door casing that way. It’s way easier than guessing wich piece of trim is the culprit. Just be careful with the ash!
