My end-unit townhouse is basically a giant glass box and the summers here in Canada are starting to get brutal. The heat is killing us. We don't have any central air and honestly, a full HVAC overhaul is just way too expensive for us right now. I’m mostly worried about our bedroom because it's impossible to sleep when it's 30 degrees inside, and I feel terrible for our cats who just pant all day. I’ve been looking into mini splits but I’m a bit confused about the actual setup. I’ve heard they’re quieter than window units, but how much work is the installation? Do I need a pro to come out or is it somthing I can figure out myself? I really just want to know if they acutally move enough air to make a difference in a room with alot of sun exposure. If anyone has experience with these in a similar setup, I’d love to hear if it actually helped your power bill or if it's just as pricey as running a portable unit. I just need a way to stay cool without breaking the bank.

A mini split is going to be the most effective way to cool that room, but the "breaking the bank" part is where it gets tricky. Unless you're comfortable drilling a 3-inch hole through your exterior wall, running a dedicated electrical circuit from your panel, and handling flared refrigerant lines, it’s not a project most people shoud DIY. Hiring a contractor in Canada for a single-zone install usually lands between $4,000 and $6,000. It’s incredibly quiet beacuse the noisy compressor sits outside, but that upfront cost is massive compared to a simple window unit.
Since you're dealing with a "glass box" situation, your first move should be **heat rejection**. No AC unit is going to keep up efficiently if the sun is baking the room all day. Investing in heavy blackout curtains or cellular shades will make a huge difference in how hard the unit has to work. If you do go with a mini split, look for an **inverter** model. These ramp thier speed up and down to maintain a steady temperture, wich is way better for handling constant solar heat than a basic portable unit that just cycles on and off. If the multi-thousand dollar price tag is too much, avoid those single-hose portable units you see at big-box stores. They're pretty terrible because they vent air out of the room, which creates a vacuum that pulls hot air in from other parts of the house. If you can't do a mini split, a U-shaped window unit is a solid middle ground. The design allows the window to close almost all the way through the unit, which keeps the loud compressor noise outside and makes it much more tolerable for sleeping.

Those DIY kits like MrCool are the real deal, but keep in mind the refrigerant lines are a fixed length. You can't cut them, so you usually end up with a big 'cobra coil' of extra copper tubing sitting behind the outdoor unit—not the prettiest, but it works without a vacuum pump.
Regarding the cats, the filters on a wall unit are actualy way easier to maintain than a window unit or portable. You just pop the front cover, slide out the mesh screens, and rinse them in the sink. I do mine every two weeks during shedding season. It takes five minutes and keeps the airflow from tanking. Just don't skip it or the evaporator coil will get gross.

One thing people overlook is the condensate drain. In a townhouse, you need a clear gravity path for that water to exit, or you'll have to install a noisy condensate pump behind the wall unit. Also, check your local code regarding the electrical disconnect; usally, you need a weatherproof box within sight of the condenser.
Since you've got all that glass, try to find a unit with a 'Follow Me' sensor in the remote. It tells the system the temperature at your bedside instead of just at the ceiling. It really helps when the sun is blasting trough those windows.
