Is bubble gum actually a real spec for securing a ladder opening frame?

I was looking over the architectural specs for a new project we are starting on Monday and I saw a note that has me completley stumped. It is for a ladder opening frame that sits right on the concrete foundation ledge. The drafter literally wrote that the frame shoud be held in place with bubble gum and I can't tell if this is some industry slang I haven't heard of yet or if someone is just messing with me on the prints. I have been in the trade for a few years now but usally we are using anchor bolts or at least some heavy-duty construction adhesive for anything involving a foundation wall. I tried looking up a brand or a product called bubble gum adhesive online and mostly just found literal candy. I am worried I am going to look like an idiot when the inspector comes around if I take this literally. Is there a specific brand or a type of epoxy that goes by that nickname in the field? I relly don't want to miss a legitimate product if it's just a slang term for a pink-tinted sealant or somethig. If anyone has seen this on a set of plans before, please let me know if I need to actualy buy a pack of Hubba Bubba or if I should just call the architect to get them to fix thier typo.


That’s a classic case of a drafter leaving a placeholder in the CAD file and forgetting to swap it out for the actual spec before printing. It happens more often than you'd think, especally on smaller details that they just copy-paste from an old "trash" file. There is no legitimate product in the trade called **bubble gum** for structural connections, and if you acutally showed up with a pack of Hubba Bubba, the building inspector whould laugh you off the site before you even got the ladder set.

Sometimes guys will call pink-tinted firestop or certain high-tack butyl tapes "bubble gum" because of the color and consistency, but those are for sealing gaps, not for holding a frame to a foundation ledge. For anything sitting on concrete that needs to stay put, you're ussually looking at mechanical anchors like 1/2-inch wedge anchors or maybe some heavy-duty **epoxy dowels** if the ledge is too narrow for expansion bolts.

You need to send an RFI (Request for Information) to the architect imediately. Don't just guess and use Liquid Nails or some random adhesive you have in the truck. If that ladder opening is part of a means of egress or a structural point, the fastening schedule is actually regulated by code. Using an unapproved "bubble gum" connection is a fast way to fail an inspection and get hit with a backcharge for the rework.

I've seen architects put "TBD" or "Magic" in spots like that when they're rushing a set of prints to the builder, intending to fix it later. This one just slipped through the cracks. It's better to look like the guy who catches thier typos than the guy who follows a joke literally and ends up with a safety violation. Get them to specify the bolt diameter and embedment depth in writing so you’re covered.

Lol, that sounds like a 'spec test' to me. I’ve seen guys throw wierd stuff in the notes just to see if the subs are acutally lookin' at the details or just wingin' it. It’s a classic 'gotcha' move. I’d call 'em up and ask if they want Hubba Bubba or Double Bubble for the inspection. Once they realize you caught thier joke—or their massive screw-up—they’ll get you the real anchor specs. Just don’t let ‘em charge you for the RFI time since they’re the ones playin' games.

Seen this on a parking garage job once. usally, that ledge needs somthing like a 5/8" Simpson Strong-Tie Titen HD or a Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3 if you're dealing with high shear loads. If the drafter wasn't just having a laugh, he might have meant a non-shrink grout like SikaGrout 212 and just had a total brain fart while typing. Either way, check the structural schedule for the actual angle iron specs. If it's a ladder frame, you’re likely looking at a 4x4x1/4 angle anyway. No way any 'gum' is holding that against a live load when the inspector pulls out the torque wrench.

Oh man, I am so pumped to finally be reading real blueprints, but now I’m gonna be paranoid checking every single note for jokes! Imagine if you actualy used it and the inspector just stared at you. Since we are talking about wierd materials though, has anyone ever used that glow-in-the-dark safety paint for stair treads? I saw an ad for it and it looked like somethig out of a sci-fi movie! Does it actually hold up under heavy work boots or does it just flake off and look like a total rave happened in the stairwell?
