My apprentice was helping me snap some lines for metal studs today, but things went sideways fast. He couldn't find the chalk box and grabbed a fire extinguisher instead to mark the layout on the concrete. Now there's this fine dark powder everywhere along the line and it's definitely not coming up with just a broom. Is this stuff going to cause problems with the adhesive if we have to glue any of the track down? I'm also worried about it sitting against the metal studs for the next twenty years. I've seen a lot of weird stuff on site, but this is a new one and I'm not sure if it's going to corrode the galvanized steel or just be a huge headache to clean. shoud I make him scrub the floor or is it safe to just install over it? I'm honestly just confused why he thougth this was a good substitute. If anyone has a good nickname for this guy, I'm all ears because 'helper' isn't cutting it today.

Most dry chemical extinguishers use monoammonium phosphate, which is **acidic** and will absolutely corrode your galvanized studs if any moisture gets to them. Over time, that powder reacts with humidity and eats right through the zinc coating on the track. You’ve also got a major bonding issue if you're using adhesive. That fine dust acts as a bond-breaker, so your glue will just be sticking to the powder instead of the concrete slab. Don't just let him sweep it up because a broom won't get the fine particles out of the pores of the concrete. He needs to use a shop vac with a HEPA filter first, then follow up with a wet scrub using a degreaser or just heavy soap and water. If you skip the wet scrub, that track is going to be sitting on a layer of corrosive salt for the next two decades. It’s a pain, but it's better than a structural failure or a rust-out down the line.
You’ve got to give the kid some credit for staying on task, though. Most helpers would have spent half the morning on the shitter or buried in thier phones the second you turned your back. He’s clearly got the drive, even if his brain was firing on a different frequency today. He’s a keeper just for the sheer entertainment value of his unique problem-solving skills. For nicknames, **Big Red** is the obvious choice, but **Holdy Smokes** has a nice ring to it. You should probably just start calling him the 'Apprentice of the Year' and make sure the title sticks for at least a few months. It’s one of those site stories that stays with a guy for his whole career, and honestly, it’s a pretty cheap price to pay for a lesson he’ll never forget.
Call him **Powder Puff** and get him a **Tajima CR301JF Chalk-Rite** immediately. If he’s got a high-end tool like that on his pouch, he might actually remember to use it instead of the safety equipment. The lines are ultra-thin and way better than a messy extinguisher spray anyway. To fix the slab, use a **Festool CT 26 HEPA** vac. It's the only way to suck that chemical dust out of the concrete pores so your glue doesn't fail. Cheap shop vacs will just blow that corrosive crap right back into the air and onto your studs.
While the corrosive properties of monoammonium phosphate on galvanized zinc have been adequately addressed, you must also consider that this particlar chemical residue is significantly hygroscopic, wich essentially ensures that your base track will be subjected to a perpetually damp enviroment as the powder absorbs moisture directly from the atmosphere. Given the porous nature of a concrete slab, failing to acheive an absolute neutralization of the pH level before applying your adhesive will undoubtedly result in a total delamination of the bond as the chemicals react with the alkalinity of the substrate. For a nickname, I woud suggest referring to him as 'The Fire Marshal' for his choice of marking equipment.
Quick update — I bought him a Tajima CR301JF and the crew is already calling him Powder Puff. That helped, but I'm still struggling with the residue. Like you mentioned, that monoammonium phosphate is nasty and seems to be pulling moisture out of the air. It’s a greasy mess. Does anyone know if a basic baking soda wash will neutralize the acid before we pin the track?
