What material should I use for a 13-foot laundry rod without it sagging?

I'm trying to figure out how to set up a massive drying rod in my laundry room beacuse the small racks just aren't cutting it anymore for my family's loads. The space I’m looking at is exactly 13 feet wide, and I realy want to span the whole thing without adding a center support bracket if I can help it. I'm worried about the weight of wet jeans and hoodies eventually making the whole thing bow or collapse. I looked at some steel options at the local hardware shop, but they were pretty expensive and I wasn't sure if I shoud be looking at hollow tubing or a solid bar. woud a thick aluminum pipe hold up, or am I stuck paying for the heavy-duty steel? I just need somthing that can handle a full week's worth of laundry without bending in the middle. Any advice on what actualy works for these long stretches would be great. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I also don't want to have to redo this in six months when the bar looks like a noodle.


A 13-foot span is huge for wet laundry, and you're fighting physics if you want zero center support. Most standard closet rods or thin EMT conduit will bow significantly at that length once you start hanging heavy items like wet jeans or hoodies. Even 1-inch EMT is going to sag like a noodle over a 13-foot stretch. If you realy can't add a middle bracket, you need to look at **rigid galvanized steel pipe**, specifically the 1-inch or 1.25-inch variety used for plumbing or gas lines.

Galvanized pipe is much stiffer than the hollow aluminum or thin-walled tubing you find in the closet aisle. The problem is that these pipes usally come in 10-foot lengths. To hit 13 feet, you'd have to use a threaded coupling to join two pieces, and that joint will be a major weak point right in the middle where the stress is highest. And since you're trying to avoid a center support, that coupling is almost guaranteed to fail or bend under a full load. If you want to do this right without it looking like a disaster in six months, go to a local metal supply shop instead of a big-box hardware store. Ask for **structural steel tubing** or "DOM" tubing with at least a 1/8-inch wall thickness. It's much denser and more rigid than the stuff meant for curtains. It'll be heavier, so you'll need to bolt your end flanges directly into the wall studs with long lag bolts. Don't even think about using drywall anchors for a span this long. Another option is to look at **Unistrut**. It isn't the prettiest solution, but it’s designed for industrial spans and has incredible weight capacity. But honestly, even with thick steel, 13 feet is pushing it. If you notice a slight dip after the first few loads, you might have to give in and add a single aircraft cable support from the ceiling to the middle of the rod. It's low-profile and will keep the whole thing from eventually collapsing.

Have you ruled out the moisture issue with all that heavy steel? In a laundry room, you're looking at constant high humidity. Even with galvanized pipe, if you get any scratches from metal hangers, you’re looking at rust stains on your clothes within a year. Also, are you sure your studs are up for this? A 13-foot rod plus a week of wet denim is an incredible amount of leverage. Have you checked if those end walls are acutally structural? If they're just partition walls, you might find the whole wall bowing inward before the pipe even bends.
