Should I get a JennAir induction range for a window placement?

My old 20-year-old electric range with a downdraft is finally on its last legs and I realy want to switch to induction. The problem is the stove sits right in front of a big window, so putting in a regular hood isn't an option. I've been looking at the JennAir Rise induction range since it has the downdraft built in, but there are so few reviews and it's a massive investment. I'm a bit worried about the glass top and how it'll hold up. I thougt about a pop-up vent behind the stove, but our granite counters aren't deep enugh to fit the mechanism. Has anyone used those flush-mount ceiling vents? I'm wondering if they actualy pull enough steam or if they're just a waste of money when they're that high up. We want to do a kitchen refresh in a few years but we aren't planning on moving any of the appliances around. Any advice on these downdraft units? I'm stuck between the KitchenAid and the JennAir, but I'm open to other ideas if I'm missing somthing obvious. I just need a solution that won't require me to block my window view or rip out all my cabinets just to get some decent ventilation.


The reality of these built-in downdraft units is that they're a niche market, which is why you're seeing so few options. JennAir basicly invented the downdraft range, and because KitchenAid is part of the same parent company, those two models share a lot of the same internal plumbing and engineering. JennAir is essentially the luxury version with a bit more power and a sleeker finish. If your current ducting is already set up for a downdraft through the floor, sticking with one of these is going to be significantly cheaper than trying to reconfigure your entire ventilation system.

Regarding those flush-mount ceiling vents, save your money. They look sleek, but physics isn't on your side. Steam and grease expand as they rise, and by the time they reach an eight-foot ceiling, a flush vent doesn't have enough capture area or suction to grab most of it. You'll end up with a sticky film on your window and ceiling within a year. Since you aren't moving the range during the kitchen refresh, the built-in downdraft is actualy your best bet for keeping that window view clear.

Don't stress too much about the induction glass top. Most of these high-end ranges use **Schott Ceran** glass, which is incredibly durable. The big advantage with induction is that the surface itself doesn't get scorching hot—the pan does. This means spills don't bake onto the glass like they do on your old electric range, making it way easier to keep clean. Just avoid dragging heavy cast iron across it and it will look new for a long time. If you're torn between the two, go with the JennAir if the budget allows. It ussually has a higher CFM rating on the blower compared to the KitchenAid, which matters when you're trying to pull steam downward against its natural path. Just make sure your existing ductwork under the floor is the right size; these modern units often require a 6-inch duct to actually perform well. It's a big investment, but for your specific layout, it's the only solution that avoids a total construction project.

That bit about the glass not getting hot is a huge relief becasue I'm always scrubbing my current stove. Does the JennAir fan get super loud though? My old downdraft sounds like a jet engine and I can barely hear people talking while I'm cooking. Also, since I'm switching from regular electric to induction, do I realy have to replace all my pots and pans? I’ve heard you can just use a magnet to check them, but I'm not sure if that's actualy true for every single piece of cookware or if there's more to it.

The noise is an improvement over those old 90s units, but you’ll still hear it on high. Just part of the trade-off for that window view. Regarding the pans, the magnet test is the gold standard—if it sticks firmly to the bottom, you’re in business. Just watch out for thin, cheap pans; they tend to "sing" or buzz on higher induction settings.

One thing to double-check is your electrical panel. Old electric ranges often ran on a 40-amp breaker, but many of these modern induction setups need 50 amps to run all the elements and the fan at once. Better to verify that before the delivery team arrives.

Keep an eye on the splatter situation. Even with the best downdraft, frying anything is going to put a fine mist of grease on that window behind the stove. It’s way easier to wipe down than a tile backsplash, but you’ll be doing it daily. Also, check if you prefer the physical knobs on the JennAir Rise versus the touch-only controls on some other models. When your hands are messy or wet, those touch sliders can be a total pain to get to respond. I’d go play with them in a showroom first if you haven't yet just to see wich interface feels more natural for how you cook.

Check your ducting for any sharp 90-degree elbows under the floor. Downdrafts lose suction way faster than overhead hoods when they hit resistance, so a direct run is key. Also, look into wheather that model has a bridge element. It’s a game changer for long griddles, but you’ll need an induction-ready one. One last thing—make sure your granite cutout matches the JennAir specs exactly. thier tolerances are super tight. If your old downdraft hole is even a tiny bit off, you’ll be paying a fabricator to trim it on-site before the new unit can acutally drop in.
