I'm looking at putting in a border for my new driveway and a neighbor suggested using asphalt edging instead of the usual pavers or a concrete curb. I've got about 250 feet of straight shots to cover, and they suggested doing a 16-inch wide strip along both sides. I’ve seen this done once or twice but I’m worried about how the two materials actualy hold up together over time. Does the asphalt eventually pull away from the concrete or cause drainage issues since it's a bit more porous? The prep work seems like it woud be a lot easier than setting individual stones for that kind of distance, but I don't want to regret it in two years when things start shifting. If the ground settles, is it going to crack right at the seam? I realy want somthing that looks clean and keeps the grass back, but I’m a bit out of my depth on whether mixing these two is asking for trouble. Has anyone here actually lived with a setup like this for a while?

Mixing asphalt edging with a concrete driveway is common in some regions where we call it a ribbon curb, but the long-term success depends entirely on the compaction at the joint. Since asphalt is flexible and concrete is rigid, you will eventually see a hairline separation at the seam. This isn't necessarily a failure, but it is where water will try to sit. If your base isn't solid, that water gets under the concrete slab and causes undermining, which leads to the cracking you're worried about.
For 250 feet of straight shots, you absolutely need a **compacted crushed stone base** that extends at least 6 inches wider than the asphalt strip itself. If you just dig a shallow trench and pour the mix in, the edges will crumble within two seasons. You also have to consider that asphalt requires heat and pressure to set correctly. If the asphalt crew can't get a small roller or a heavy vibratory plate compactor onto that 16-inch strip becasue the concrete is in the way, the asphalt will stay porous and fall apart. Drainage isn't ussually an issue thru the material itself, but rather where the two surfaces meet. I'd recommend seting the asphalt about a quarter-inch lower than the concrete edge. This prevents a lip from forming if the ground settles slightly, and it lets the water sheet off onto the grass instead of pooling right at the transition. It keeps the grass back much better than pavers because there are no gaps for weeds to punch through.
If you go this route, make sure the asphalt guys use a **fine-grade mix** for the edging. The standard driveway mix has larger aggregate that looks chunky and rough on a narrow strip. A finer mix will give you that smooth, dark contrast against the concrete that looks sharp. It is definately faster than hand-setting stones, but don't skip the plate compactor or you'll be digging it out and replacing it with real curbing in three years.
Seen plenty of these ribbons go south since the 70s becuase guys get lazy with the bonding. If you don't paint that concrete edge with a heavy coat of emulsified asphalt or some hot tack before the blacktop hits it, they’ll never marry up. You’ll have a gap big enought to lose a nickel in by next spring. We used to run a bead of hot liquid tar right down that seam once everythign cooled off. It’s an old-school mess to apply, but it’s the only way to keep the frost from heaving the two apart. Don't let 'em skip the tack coat.
Totally agree on the tack coat. If that bond isn't tight, you're just inviting weeds. One thing people ussually miss though is the concrete edge itself—make sure your finisher doesn't leave a heavy cream or slurry buildup on the side of the slab when they pull the forms. If there's loose, dried concrete gunk on that vertical face, the asphalt is basicly sticking to dust. I always take a wire brush to the side of the concrete once the forms are off to ensure the tack actualy bites into the solid aggregate.
Quick update — I went ahead with the asphalt ribbon and it looks great. I took the advice about using a heavy tack coat seriously to make sure the bond actualy holds. We also spent an afternoon cleaning the concrete edges of any leftover slurry before they paved. The seam is super tight and it looks sharp. Thanks for the help!
