I’ve been looking at those cheap metal shed and carport combos you see online becuase the price point is right for my current budget. My plan is to fix up our gravel driveway since it’s mostly washed away anyway and use that as the base for the new building. I’m just a bit skeptical about how flimsy they might be once they're acutally standing. I don't have a ton of extra cash to throw around, so I really need to know if these thin-walled units can actually handle the elements or if they’re just a giant headache waiting to happen. The assembly looks like a nightmare of tiny screws too. Has anyone here actually lived with one of these for a few years? I’m trying to decide if it’s a smart move to fix the driveway and the storage problem at once or if I’m just throwing good money after bad.

Those budget metal shed/carport combos are basially just heavy-duty aluminum foil. I put one up about three years ago to stop paying for a storage unit, and while it's still standing, the assembly was a total nightmare. You're looking at hundreds of tiny, identical screws and instructions that are mostly vague diagrams. If you don't have a second person to help hold the panels while you're fastening them, a light breeze will fold the metal over and ruin the entire structure before you even get the roof on.
The metal is incredibly thin, usally around 29 or 30 gauge. If you live anywhere that gets hail or even heavy falling branches, expect it to look like the surface of the moon within a season. And since you're planning to use a gravel base, you absolutely cannot skip the **anchoring kit**. These things are so light that they become giant kites in high winds. I had to buy extra long auger anchors and strap the frame down to prevent it from shifting off the foundation.
Fixing the driveway at the same time is a smart move, but make sure your pad is perfectly level. If the base is even slightly off, those pre-drilled holes in the metal panels won't line up, and you'll end up having to drill your own holes, wich leads to rust spots later on. I'd suggest putting down a layer of heavy-duty landscape fabric under your new gravel to keep the weeds from growing up inside your shed and trapping moisture against the floor frame.
In the long run, you'll save that $150 a month, but be prepared for the building to feel flimsy. It’s a functional stop-gap, not a forever structure. If you can swing it, look into buying a slightly thicker gauge steel or even building a simple lean-to with pressure-treated lumber. But if the budget is firm, just set aside two full days for assembly and keep a tube of clear silicone handy to seal every single screw head, or it will leak like a sieve.
I went this route two years ago and the gravel base is where most people mess up. Don't just dump stones and call it good. I dug out about four inches, packed it down with a rented plate compactor, and used 3/4-inch crushed stone. If you don't pack it, the shed frame will settle unevenly and the door will jam every single time you try to open it. I also threw down a thick vapor barrier under the gravel. Without it, the condensation inside those metal units is brutal; my tools started rusting within a month untill I realized the moisture was just rising up through the rocks. Definitely spend the extra fifty bucks on a heavy tarp oroper ground seal.
Have you ruled out just finding a used wooden shed instead? I’m a bit skeptical about the long-term savings becuase those metal kits sweat like crazy. Even if you keep the rain out, the interior walls often drip with condensation in the mornings. If you’re storing tools, have you thougt about how you'll prevent them from rusting?
Also, check your local zoning before you prep the gravel. In some areas, putting a structure on a driveway base can trigger permit issues or even a tax reassessment. It’d be a shame to spend the cash just to have the city tell you it's not a legal spot for a building.
While the structural integrity of 29-gauge steel is indeed questionable, you must also meticulously consider the galvanic corrosion that occurs if you utilize substandard fasteners that lack the appropriate EPDM washers to isolate the zinc-coated screws from the panels. Furthermore, since you mentioned refurbishing your gravel driveway as a foundation, ensure you are utilizing a specific #57 crushed limestone rather than rounded river rock to facilitate better mechanical interlocking, wich prevents the lateral shifting that often plagues these lightweight frames during high-velocity wind events.
If you're worried about that thin metal but need to stay on a budget, you shold relly look at the ShelterLogic Monarc Canopy.
