Is it finally time to rip out my old cracked driveway and start fresh?

My driveway is honestly a total disaster right now. It’s got these deep, ugly cracks running everywhere, and that one section where I tried to patch it myself last summer looks like a giant mismatched band-aid becuase the color is so off. Every time I pull the car in, I feel the tires hitting those uneven spots and it’s just getting worse with all the rain we've been having lately. I think I’m finally past the point where a quick fix is going to do anything useful. I’ve noticed a few people on my block getting brand new concrete poured and the difference it makes for the house is huge. I’m starting to lean towards just biting the bullet and doing a full tear-out. Has anyone here gone thru a full replacement recently? I’m curious if you went with a basic smooth finish or did somethig textured to help with grip when it gets icy. Also, what shoud I be looking for in a quote to make sure they’re actually doing the sub-base right and not just cutting corners?


Full tear-outs are a massive headache but usually the only way to fix structural failure once the soil underneath has shifted. If you're seeing deep cracks and heave, your old sub-base was probly just dirt or poorly compacted sand. When you get quotes, you need to see exactly how much **crushed stone** or gravel they plan to bring in. Most residential drives need at least 4 to 6 inches of compacted 3/4-minus gravel. If a contractor says they’re just going to pour over the existing dirt after a quick scrape, find someone else immediatly. Regarding the finish, skip the smooth trowel look. It’s a nightmare in the winter and even a light rain makes it like a skating rink. A **medium broom finish** is standard for a reason. It gives you that neccessary bite for your tires without looking like sandpaper. If you want somthing fancier, look into exposed aggregate, but it’s pricier and can be harder on bare feet. Pay close attention to the slope and drainage in the bid. I’ve seen so many guys pour a beautiful slab that ends up dumping every gallon of rainwater right against the foundation or into the garage. You want a minimum 1/8 to 1/4 inch of drop per foot away from any structures. Also, ask about the reinforcement. Don't let them tell you fiber mesh in the mix is enough on its own; you want actual **rebar** tied on chairs so it stays in the middle of the slab, not sitting on the ground.

Expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $15 per square foot depending on where you live and the prep work involved. It’s a big hit to the wallet—easily $12k or more for a standard two-car drive—but the boost in curb appeal usually covers the cost if you ever sell. Just make sure they’re cutting control joints every 8 to 10 feet or it’s going to crack wherever it wants anyway.

Wait, $12k? That's way more than I was expecting for a standard driveway. Does that price usually include hauling away all the old, broken chunks?

Also, how long do I actualy have to wait before I can park on it? I'm worried about the city ticketing me if I have to leave the car on the street for weeks while it cures. And about the sealant—is that something the contractor handles, or do I need to go buy a sprayer and do it myself?

You can usually get back on it with a car in about 7 days, but if you're worried about street parking, ask for a high-early strength mix. It hits load-bearing PSI much faster than standard loads. Regarding the sealant, don't let them just spray a cheap "cure and seal" and leave. You realy want to wait 28 days for the slab to fully cure before applying a penetrating silane-siloxane sealer. It’s the best way to protect it from salt and spalling once winter hits. Also, make sure they’re using a 4,000 PSI mix—anything less won't hold up to the weight over time.

If you're planning on parking a heavy truck or a boat out there, definitly ask about the slab thickness. Most guys default to 4 inches, but forking over a bit extra for a 5 or 6-inch pour—especially near the street—is a lifesaver for longevity.

Also, keep an eye out for tree roots once the old concrete is gone. If there’s a big oak or maple nearby, those roots will just heave the new slab in a few years if they aren't handled during the demo phase. It's way cheaper to deal with a root barrier now than to replace the whole thing again in five years.

One thing to watch like a hawk during the pour is the water-to-cement ratio. Some crews love adding extra water to the truck so the mix is easier to cream and spread, but it ruins the long-term PSI and leads to surface scaling after the first winter. If it looks like soup coming out of the chute, speak up. You want a 4-inch slump, maybe 5 max.

Also, check if they’re using an air-entrained mix if you live in a cold climate. Those microscopic air bubbles are what keep the surface from flaking off when you use de-icers later on.
