Are these budget-friendly ProPress knockoffs actually safe to use?

I’ve got several plumbing projects coming up at my house and my parents' place, mostly involving copper. I’m not great at sweating pipe and I really don't want to use PEX or Sharkbites if I can avoid it. The problem is my shoulder is shot, so the manual crimping tools are out of the question. I’m allready deep into the Milwaukee M18 system, but the price for thier official press tool is just way too high for a weekend warrior like me. I've been looking at the Vevor cordless kits and some of those off-brand ones on Amazon like AMZCNC or IWENISEN since they’re usually under $500. It feels like a massive risk compared to a Ridgid, but the used market around here isn't much cheaper than buying new. Does anyone have real-world experience with these cheaper units for copper? I’m worried about the crimp quality and whether they actualy last long enugh to finish a basement project without leaking everywhere.


The Vevor units are acutally a solid middle ground if you aren't running them for eight hours a day. I've seen a few guys keep them as backups for thier Ridgid setups, and they perform well enought for residential repairs. You're sacrificing the long-term durability of the seals in the hydraulic ram and the ability to get the tool calibrated or repaired locally, but for a basement project and some work at your parents' place, it’ll pay for itself compared to the cost of a single profesional plumbing call. Since your shoulder is shot, stay away from the manual hydraulic pump tools. They require more positioning and leverage than you might think, expecially in tight joist spaces. There is an alternative called an **iCrimp** that attaches to your M18 impact driver. It uses the impact’s torque to close the jaws, so the tool takes all the physical strain. It’s a bit slower and can be clunky in corners, but it’s a fraction of the price of a dedicated press tool and works surprisingly well for copper. One major issue with the random Amazon brands is jaw compatibility. Most reputable tools use a standard pin diameter so you can swap in Ridgid or Milwaukee jaws if you ever need a specific size or a replacement. Some of the off-brands use proprietary dimensions, meaning if a jaw cracks or you lose one, the whole kit is a paperweight. Vevor is genrally a safer bet here becuase they tend to mimic the standard designs more closely than the alphanumeric brands. Just remember that your prep work has to be flawless. ProPress is less forgiving than soldering when it comes to pipe prep. If you don't **deburr the outside** and inside of that copper pipe perfectly, you’re going to nick the O-ring inside the fitting. Most of the failed crimp horror stories you hear are actually just people being lazy with a reaming tool. Spend the extra thirty seconds on every joint to make sure the pipe is smooth and clean, and those budget tools will give you a leak-free result.

Listen, if you're allready on the M18 platform, keep an eye out for a used 2773-20. But since you're on a budget, those Vevor kits get the job done for a few house calls. One thing the other guy missed: check the jaw profile. You want 'V' profile jaws for Viega ProPress fittings. Some of those Amazon kits like the AMZCNC come with 'M' or 'TH' jaws meant for PEX-AL-PEX or European standards, and they'll crush your copper fittings into a mess. Also, grab a Ridgid 227S inner-outer reamer. Don't use the cheap plastic ones. If you don't chamfer that edge, you'll slice the EPDM seal in a heartbeat and then you're cutting out pipe.

While the mechanical integrity of the Vevor units is genrally adequate for light-duty residential applications, you must remain acutely aware of the absence of an auto-cycle completion indicator on these lower-tier hydraulic assemblies, as failing to ensure the ram has fully traversed its intended path can result in a catastrophic joint failure. Furthermore, regardless of the tool's pedigree, you absolutely must utilize a proper depth-marking gauge to ensure the copper tubing is fully seated within the fitting's socket, beacuse even a millimeter of misalignment during the press phase can compromise the EPDM O-ring’s seal against the pipe wall in a way that eventually manifests as a slow, corrosive weep rather than an immediate spray.

Spot on about the Vevor being a solid pick for home projects. One small thing to add though: make sure you're acutally marking your insertion depth with a Sharpie before you press. Since those cheaper units can be a bit clunky and heavy, it’s relly easy for the pipe to shift slightly while you’re lining up the jaws, expecially if your shoulder is acting up. If you don't have that visual reference, you might think you got a good crimp when the pipe actually backed out a quarter-inch. It’s a cheap way to double-check the tool's work.

I picked up one of those Vevor kits for a kitchen remodel and the weight is realy the only killer. Since your shoulder is shot, just know these things are way heavier and more awkward than the M18 stuff. I actualy ended up using a heavy-duty bungee cord around a joist to help hold the tool up while I lined up the press.

It’s a bit of a clunky process compared to the pro tools, but I’ve done over 40 joints now and haven't had a single leak. For the price of two service calls, it was a no-brainer for me.

So I tried looking closer at those Vevor specs after the mention of V profile jaws. It looks like some cheaper kits ship with M jaws instead, wich would have been a mess for my Viega fittings. For those who use these, how do you handle the lack of an auto-cycle indicator? Do you just hold the trigger until it bottoms out and hope the seal is good?
