It's not just that. Some software gets confused, and thinks it's on 9x.
There are a lot of crap programmers out there.

Being a biochemist doesn't seem to have done my computing career any great harm.
:o)
Is this your shortest ever post Johnny?
Progress.
Rather than just talking s**te you're now talking about it.
It could have been shorter but, yes, it probably is. :-)
well it will get you the free upgrade to W10 next month

What makes you think that's any better?
Just because it's an increment in the version number doesn't automatically mean it's going to be better...

True
But in this case it is better as a desktop OS (well the Preview version is, which must be getting close to the release version since it's due for release at the end of july)
Is it better for the desktop than windows 8.1 with classic shell ? I am qui te happy with that and all my programs work OK. Simon. Simon.
What makes you think it wont be? Have you tried any of the preview releases?
I've never used 8.1 with classic shell so I don't know how they compare.

Yes, several. Have you?
The latest beta build breaks the system if installed via Windows Update and has to be recovered by reinstalling from an ISO. And people think this crock of shit is going to be production-ready code at the end of July?
Time for a reality check.
Yes.
How have you been offered a win 10 update from windows update? I haven't been and would like to try it. What do I need to hack to make it happen?
Be sure MS classes your installation as legal, be fully updated with latest 8.1 patches, and wait for the (staggered?) invite to reach you...

GIYF.
You don't need to hack anything.
I think Mike was talking about the Windows 10 Preview updating to a new version and breaking, not about the upgrades being offered for when the RTM version comes out.
If you want to try out the Windows 10 Preview, you can sign up and download it from here:
Tried that in a VM, broke it and will probably wait until end of August to upgrade either of my 8.1 systems to 10.

Yes, but then we know dennis is somewhat hard of thinking.

What do you expect to gain from it? Serious question.
At this stage just to see if I regard Win10 as "usable" without an equivalent of Start8/ClassicShell, hopefully a longer product life to ~2026
