Windows 8

Started a W8 machine in a hurry to do something. Huge banner over everything saying free upgrade to 8.1. One button saying "download from App Store". No Cancel, No or don't option.

Didn't want that, so tried to do something, anything else. Nothing works.

Got really, really, really annoyed.

Then thought a bit, hit the button, then opened Task Manager and killed the App Store.

It now seems OK. The banner hasn't appeared on the second machine here.

Maybe this posting will save some small percentage stress somewhere.

That is all that I was able to do!

Very annoying, not being able to just cancel the banner. I did try to download the update on another PC. 2-3 hours later it just failed with a meaningless error code.

This is all part of God's punishment for using Windows.

Jesus may have worn open toed sandals, but I suspect he used an adze and a spoke shave rather than Unix :)

When God created the world, he didn't program it in Visual Basic.

(or perhaps he did, and that's the real problem).

Aramaic. So I have read! :-)

Did you try googling for the error code? they aren't meaningless, just obscure. Post it here and someone might look it up for you.

You can read Aramaic? Respect! :)

I must admit I find an adze and sandals not an appealing mix. Though the Roman sandal - caliga - wasn't open toed.

Could someone ask Tony Blair to mention that service pack one is a little overdue?

Yes, it did not get me anywhere.

Reminiscent of IBM computers of the 1970s, but IBM did publish what the error codes meant. These days computers have plenty of memory for including a meaningful message. MS pulled the update for a while.

He used a Windows environment that got a BDOS on the 6th day. That's when he gave up and went to do another project elsewhere using Unix.

I understand that not all Windows 8.1 will run on machines that run Windows 8, that Windows 8 support is limited to 2015 and users are better off using Windows 7 if they have to go the m$oft route.

ITYM BSOD. BDOS has to be some kind of operating system :)

Indeed. A component of CP/M, in fact.

I'm trying to jam Android and VLIW SIMD into my poor little brain at the moment. I didn't need someone to perform a refresh on the XIOS :)

I spent the day jamming UNIX into about 180 brains!

I find it difficult jamming it into one. So much so, that any time I have tried, I've ended up wanting to throw the computer out of the window after 5 mins.

Well, I just finished giving the course. It seemed well received by most of them and some have even gone away to install a system and/or find out more.
