The F1 case was not that the filler didnt connect properly, it was that the driver drove away still connected to it!

I am alsways amused thet the people who advocate hyfrogenn being used by amateurs in fairly uncontrollled public places are probably the same people who think nuclear power, used by professionsals in isolated places of extreme security and safety consciousness, should not be allowed.

Thing about petrol/diesel is that if there's a leak, you see it. And while volatile, it takes a while to evaporate. Hydrogen is already a gas and the first notification you'd have of a substantial leak would be an effing great bang.

You don't always spota petrol leak. Think 'Buncefield'.

False dichotomy. Not only because few comfort breaks have appropriate filling stations attached, but I am averse to my 1,000 mile per month travel pattern being interrupted by more than two special trips to somewhere to fill up.

Thing is that unless it is in an enclosed area the hydrogen disperses really quickly.

In car/refuelling, naively, I would have thought the 700 bar pressure would be more of a problem than the leak/fire risk.

And upwards, witness the Hindenburg disaster. No bang, just a hell of a lot of fire. And the ruptured tanks of diesel for the engines probably did as much damage as the hydrogen, if not more.

If hydrogen is adopted for ICE cars, I hope they have a means of making sure there's no static charge on the car before they connect the fuel line!

Wasn't F1 refuelling similar. If anything can go wrong eventually it will go wrong.

It makes it a more practical proposition than natural gas or methanol for day to day use. It was also fairly straightforward to convert a petrol engine to run on LPG.

Natural gas requires much higher pressures to liquefy whereas LPG can be held in a steel tank in the boot or under the vehicle. Refuelling is also easier.
