Velux Roof Window with centre hinge

I'd like to know how one detaches the window from the frame of a centre hinged Velux roof window. I do NOT want to detach the window - I want to make sure that it doesn't detach accidentally while I am doing something else!



I have a little problem on my roof directly uphill from the Velux window. If I can open the window and swing it round until it is vertical - possibly a little more than vertical - then I can reach the problem area by standing on a ladder inside the attic room. Otherwise I'd have to call in someone else to go climbing up on my roof. Am I in danger of dropping a boodily big window into my attic bedroom?

No, I swing mine right round for cleaning and they don't fall out!

Look after them I just got a quote from Velux for replacing my 6 :-(

Worth checking the price of the competition IME - last time I was looking for roof windows (>20 years ago!) there was a substantial saving to be had not going for Velux branded ones.

I'm not sure. I looked into this recently and went with Velux. It was about a

30% saving if I'd gone 'economy', so about £400 on 2 roughly 1m2 windows. Had to factor in blinds and costs if non-standard, and the general trust in a brand I'd not heard of. Also these were being installed by a contractor as part of a re-roof, so the extra wasn't that much in the overall scheme of things.

FWIW, my neighbours recently had a reroof with 4 large roof windows - they used Fakro. They're architects so I'd expect them to know something about it all. Certainly more than me anyway :-)

Indeed, when part of a large supply and fit job the material costs will form smaller component of the overall cost. However since I was buying and fitting them myself I remember noting at the time[1] it was a fairly large difference:

[1] Looking at my spreadsheet, apparently I paid a total of £520 for a pair of large "means of escape" windows. IIRC, a similar large Velux top hung MoE window was more than that.

I expect that Fakro are a fairly well known brand for any group with more than a passing interest in the things. :-)

Or on you - which would be a bigger concern. Did you manage to sort out your roof?
