Velux in a slate roof

Hi all I am considering putting a velux window into a slate roofed extention. The roof is yet to be built.

I have no experience of velux windows and would appreciate others experience.

Specifically:

a) Are they easy to fit or specialist? b) How much do they protrude from a slate roof? c) Any examples of cost?

Thank you

Easy for a confident and competent DIY person who doesn't mind wielding saws. As the roof is not yet constructed, it would be better to ensure that the roof designer designs in a suitable gap for the window, with suitable reinforcement to counteract the loss of rafters.

That varies. Versions are available that don't protrude at all if this is important (i.e. for planning permission or aesthetic reasons).

As the other posts

Depends on what size and type you want. The smallest (550x780mm) in some styles can work out quite cheap at under 150 quid. The more exotic sizes and styles however can be 'kin expensive ;-)

(If you need things like a MOE (Means Of Escape) window then have a look at the Colt windows at the loft shop).

If you post your size requirements I can give you prices from the catalogues if that is any help...

Cost is from 100 pounds to 1,000 pounds, depending on features as much as size. Plus flashing, lining, blind...

You can order a brochure from

but most of the photos seem to be pantiled roofs, to disguise how much the window protrudes.

Thanks John,

Any chance of a link for Colt windows?

If you've a price for something like 600 wide 1200 long, it would be useful.

The cheapest Velux I can see that is close to your requirement is the centre pivot GGL range. There is a 660x1180mm window at 245 inc VAT. Top hung would take that to 305 (the GHL range). Means of escape top hung would take it up to 366.

The colt windows in the same size would work out at 157 for the basic centre pivot, and 231 for the MOE version (which is also their top hung one). There is also a top quarter hung 650x1180mm window at 200.

You will also need a flashing kit appropriate for your roof finish - these are typically 30 to 40 quid for either brand in the size you are looking at.
