There's an App For That

Following my post about being advised that I could earn more interest on some savings I had a poke around to see what rates are available.

There is little difference but many online accounts allow you to open an account online but then you have to manage it using an app on a smartphone.

I have size 11.5 feet with hands to match, it seems to me one slip with a pudgy finger and my savings could disappear in a puff of smoke. I have no problems with online banking using a computer because it will have a decent sized screen and a proper keyboard.

Am I a dinosaur?

PS my smartphone has an 11" screen but it lives on my coffee table.

Link a BT keyboard to your smartphone. Job done!

Agreed. Or use a stylus rather than your fingers when entering information on the screen.

My wife found typing WhatsApp messaages on her phone really annoying, and a bluetooth keyboard did the trick. (Trust, I think - £20 or so.)

I resisted for a long time opening an app-only account, but in April they had some much higher ISA rates, short term. Follow your instincts about using a not-a-real-bank who can't be bothered to build a website.

Use an Android emulator, such as Bluestacks to run the mobile app on a PC?

I too suffer from “fat finger syndrome” and avoid any use of phone apps so tend to use my iPad for anything that needs an app. I have yet to find an Apple app that does not work on both iPad and iPhone. However, if it is banking on the move you need it for then the size of the iPad might be a problem.

No. Just being sensible.

What smartphone has an 11" screen? Or did you mean a tablet which can take a sim card, or an 11" laptop?

No. Just marketing resistant.

Unless its a dire emergency, I never use anything portable to access financial counts. I loathe smartphone 'apps' with a passion.

Depending on how much money you have sloshing around its almost always better off in something a little more risky than bank accounts.

Long term binds, or better still get yourself a free account with a broker (Interactive investors) and put it into a selection of exchange traded funds. (ETFs). Just use a site like

to select say funds with a good steady performance over the last few years and buy them

I'd suggest a doorstop for one that size. :=)

That won't pass Play Integrity, which an increasing number of banking apps are requiring.

Just a word the the wise that getting a bigger screen (i.e iPad Pro

11.1") may not be the total solution.

SWMBO relies on hers, and there are a few apps that refuse to respect the machine and insist on running in a small screen in the wrong orientation. Which then breaks all sorts of accessibility features that do respect orientation.

I emailed one ("Livi" who are forced on us by our local GP) and they replied saying they couldn't be bothered to fix it now they'd got the money from the NHS.

There is surely a kings ransom waiting for the person who can use a

3/4/5G USB modem stick in a PC to somehow completely deliver an Android PC that can access banking and all that jazz.

I was told back in 2011 (and have the reciepts where I quite blunly rebutted the notion) is would be solved by making everying HTML5 so it would render anywhere.

I am fairly sure you can install android on a Raspberry Pi.

It should get you there, though not without work

It should have been...

No, just someone else struggling to live in a small world. I sympathise!

Some phones will even drive an external screen via USB C these days - so plugging into a dock can give a more desktop experience.

You can also get some mobile keyboards / touch pad combos that have a cradle to hold the phone.

Why would anyone want a banking app on an (easily stolen) smart phone?

If you need to know your balance when you're out and about, just use an ATM.

I have MuMu Android emulator on my PC. I have added a Barclays app which I have used to make a payment. Dave W

According to the banks, everybody, in some cases there's no choice.

Anyone who has noticed that the best of them can't be used after they have been stolen

F*ck that

The choice is not to use the bank
