‘special’ bolt name?

I recall seeing a type of bolt similar to a roofing bolt, with a shallow / flattish mushroom head. Usually without a slot BUT between the head and the thread, a square section, which fitted into a square hole, preventing the bolt from turning as the nut was done up.

Can anyone advise the correct name, please?

When the term screw is used it normally refers to a device/fitting that forms it own thread in the material the fixing is made into. Bolt applies to fixings that either require a nut or some other pre-formed thread. As always there are exceptions namely the machine screw which can have hex, square, countersunk, cheese head etc. heads being different from a bolt which generally is not threaded along the full length of the shank whereas a machine screw is.

No. A screw is something that is all threaded. A bolt has a plain unthreaded portion.

A screw that forms its won thread is self tapping or a woodscrew
