I've long said that. People acccuse English speaking people of being lazy and not bothering to learn other languages, but it is simply about there being no obvious choice.
In non-English speaking countries, learning English is a good thing. It is likely that you will find that at least some people in countries that you visit have also learned it (it's not unusual to find a Frenchman talking to a German in the common langauage of English). If you come from an English speaking country, what language do you choose?
I did learn French and can still read directions, instructions, etc. or state my needs, to a reasonable extent, but I can't pull together the words on the spot for a conversation, having forgotten through lack of use.
