In article , harryagain scribeth thus
The National Grid has revealed that it is launching a new smart grid programme in the UK that will help reduce commercial and industrial energy use during peak demand.
Under the programme, facility owners will be paid to lower consumption during times of peak demand. National Grid will implement new technology that will monitor and automate the process ensuring minimal impact on companies? operations.

What's so new about that, they've been doing this for some time now...

I think the new bit is the automation of the process, rather than leaving it to the users to do it manually.
Unless you know otherwise.

25 years ago, British gas had "interruptibles". They hung off the high pressure grid - most were "ICI"- something. I do recall an ICIW - Warrington. They could consume as much gas as a large town. IIRC there was an ICI Billingham as well. Oh, and Runcorn (all coming back now).
Oh, and Hams Hall - in those days the only gas fired (experimental) power station. Because it used to be illegal to burn gas to make electricity.

ISTR SKF(uk) had an interuptible gas supply to a bainite salt bath heat treatment process for their spherical roller bearing line. Around 1980!
