SDS Drill recommendations?

Hi

I'm currently looking at:

BOSCH GBH2-22RE

BOSCH GBH2-26DRE

MAKITA HR2450 (does anyone know what the difference is between the X and the T model?)

I currently have an 850watt (non SDS) Bosch. But I've found it has trouble getting through some of the walls in my flat.

I had some new windows put in recently and asked one of the guys if he could finish off a few holes for me with his SDS drill. Even though it ran on

110v and looked much smaller than mine it went into my walls like a hot knife through butter! How come?

I used to think my 850w Bosch was the dogs hairy bits but I now know it aint! But I don't understand what it is about the SDS drills that have them do a much better job. Surely its not just the drill bits?

Thanks

Rob

Wickes sell two grey German Kress SDS drills (rebadged Wickes pro range). The 610w version is being sold in a sale for £80 at the mo. Standard 3 year guarantee. They are in the same quality as Makita, Bosch, etc. Go for that one. I have the larger version they sell and it is superb. The £80 sale job is wel worth it. What you save over a Bosch/Makita you can buy a whole range of SDS drill bits of all sizes, inc chisels.

Pass on that bit.

I've just bought one of these and its such a positive joy to use the bloody house is looking like a lump of cheese;!.

Excellent tool, looks right, feels right, and performs right.

Only regret is I wish I'd bought one a long time ago and hadn't wasted money on all the cheap crap like PPro etc!....

Well this one goes through concrete walls like they didn't exist whereas the other drills I've had burnt out, and the bits did just that, fell to bits!..

Really like it explained too, it seems so quiet in operation but it just does the job with that funny ticking noise!. Excellent, you won't be disappointed. The one I bought, £125 quid came with a comprehensive tool kit, and a number of bits plus two chisels which have made light work of knocking out a few engineering bricks, its like having a small kango hammer:)

Go for it, you won't regret:))

SDS is the dogs danglies now, far outperforms ye olde hammer drills.

they were once. I guess they have since ben debol----ed

Much greater hammering force, the design is very different. Whatever you get, make sure it does all 3 SDS modes: drill, hammer drill, chisel. Many dont. Bosch: midrange, good Makita: high end kit, very good.

So what's the difference between the Bosch GBH2 26DRE & 24FDR. Looking at Machine Mart as a reference...

former is 40 quid cheaper and the 'compare range' details shows it as more or less identical in spec. Is it just down to the robustness and build quality, MM does suggest that the DRE is a more 'professional' tool.

Wish I'd seen the Axminster link before they'd sold out!

They are not the same quality as Bosch or Makita, they're about the same quality as the Chinese SDS drills or the Ferm models sold by Screwfix but about 3 times the price.

Much as I hate agreeing with dIMM, my dad has the older wickes pro SDS (again a badged Kress) and it has been excellent. Certainly nothing like the cheap'n'nasty SDSs that you mention. Sure it may not be up there with bosch or the Makita but it is far, far better than the Nutool/whatever junk.

Yep, wished I'd bought my SDS years before I did.

On the topic of performance, note that because SDS is much more effective, you don't need one of these big hefty 800-900W jobs for normal use.

A 500-600W -ish SDS drills is more than enough for drilling, chopping out holes etc, and the lighter weight is much better when used for any length of time.

SDS is one of those areas where I think it is worth buying decent tool, they get hard life. I have a Stayer, which I would recommend, but I've not seen them on sale in the UK anymore.

marvellous, as I'm sure that if it was that good value most of the big tool outlets would stock it?

Bosch, Makita & Metabo ect, can sell their products easily on reputation alone, without trying to tempt you with 3 year warranties. They each sell far more than Wickes could ever hope to.

They will provide a 3 year warranty to make you feel secure in buying their own products, like B&Q do with their PPPro range. Although as I pointed out you still have you rights under the sale of goods act for upto 6 years.

This is total nonsense. Kress a quality brand. Anyone who says Kress is otherwise is an idiot.

They do. Their dealer went under in the UK. They find it profitable to rebadge for Wickes, and other prestigious makes in the US, like Cable Porter.

Exactly. Kress give one.

This one is mental.

They resort to marketing instead. Making people believe the products are better than what they are.

The Kress SDS (Wickes) is cheap for what it is.

I theory. In practice?

Good syphering

Kress are HIGHLY reliable Do a Google on Kress SDS.

Nutool/whatever

I'm glad you agree with dIMM. Kress is equivalent to any Bosch or Makita.

Yep, they got to be because they're German. They are like Trabant is to BMW.
