Cat Litter aka Fullers earth does remove the visible colouring but when VOSA stop you then not only do HMRC dip your tank they probe the exhaust. The red colour may have gone visually by 'filtering' but the chemical marker remains and is easily detectable.
They perfume the stuff too and I can smell it when someone drives down the road. AIUI its hard to remove the perfume.

If anybody does try this hope they get caught - they should pay their share of tax based on usage same as everyone else.
If you want to run & avoid duty - then use old chip shop oil ..... my neighbour does, his car stinks. He also has a 45 gallon drum of the foul smelling stuff in his garden.
Was amused to see all the valance panels on his car which were below filler cap have discoloured & buckled - they obvioulsy don't like this stuff.
A couple of years back I was driving past well known farmers market ... just down the road was HMRC with a test truck ... pulling in all the farmers - checking to see if any trucks or range rovers had red diesel in them.
Nothing but Pink Stink for me.

I have a vehicle that runs on contaminated petrol/diesel removed from wrong fill at the pumps by stupid people, and its Free problem is the vehicle only does 3mpg
