As anyone with deep pockets will know. That is total nonsense. What your pals are saying is that they can't employ anyone on the wages they are prepared to pay.

Is this your lie, or theirs?

The thing they have in common is that they are thick as pigshit.

Don't believe that. Adam certainly exists.

Many unskilled workers came here, leaving their families at home, and lived as cheaply as possible in HMOs (often unofficial and cheap), working long hours and with wages also topped up with Universal Credit and receiving Child Benefit at UK rates. A couple of years of that left them with some savings, which on return to their home country was worth vastly more.

You don't like what the majority said they wanted ?

Your problem, as always.

Since few of them bring their families, because they don't intend to stay for long, they mostly share with other EUians from the same country.

No vast chunk involved when you share with a dozen others.

No, because the locals dont live the same way.

It's much more complicated than that with those who only come for a couple of years and who are prepared to live very differently to those who will be living like that for the rest of their working life.

Precisely my position, Steve. Especially as one of my sons is himself a low-paid worker.

so what? the import process is not especially product specific. I have noted that my supermarket is sticking fresh food from Africa, the middle east and s America instead of the EU.

It is presumably cheaper.

Now the EU has made it so complex its easier to buy from countries who are not imposing artificial trade barriers

Much is same or next day delivery, often by

I don't think you actually listened or read what I write, I personally import stuff from many places as a CONSUMER.

For example there was a possibility to import some wheels from Germany., They refused to ship them 'paper work is too hard'

Got what I needed from alibaba shipped direct from China.

As I said, the big containers are not coming from Europe and nor are the small packages. And neither is the food. The EUs attitude to the trade deal is such that it is now easier to get food from anywhere BUT the EU and all other stuff from Asia and China,.

EU is a protectionist cartel. It only wants to trade with itself. Fine. It no longer wants UK expats' or tourists' money, Fine. We can spend our money in the rest of the world. But the EU can't attract the rest of the world can it? Its a closed bloc behind an Incompetence Curtain.

We might as well have gone WTO. The EU trade deal is worthless since the EU has no intention of honouring it.

In my case there was no element of supporting a particular person, as my extended family are all reasonably well paid or now retired and my sons are all doing very well at university and school and likely to get well paid jobs (eldest is studying cybersecurity and middle son wants to be a surgeon - the youngest has not yet decided, but is consistently near the top of his year).

Could you please explain how the EU is making it complex to buy from them?

I can understand them making imports to the EU from the UK difficult.

The more credit to you, for recognising that certain groups of people were experiencing a problem even though it did not touch you personally. Comfortable people often hold political views whose implications for other people are unpleasant, and only modify these views when they actually see their consequences in close up. I include myself in this.

"Opportunities" is management speak for "Big Problem"/"MFU".

The majority were as thick as pigshit.

None of this is any business of yours, so piss off. Bloody wog.

Cant have been, we left the EU.

I mainly consider myself right of centre, but also have some left of centre views - for instance, I do feel that benefits, for those that need them, are too low, but I also know (from my wife's experience of dealing with mental health patients) that some people will fake it and play the system for every penny they can get, while going all out to avoid having to work.

I have been in a union in the past, but purely (along with the other Engineers) to boost the union membership within the company to a level that made the company recognise the union in pay negotiations for the Designers.

I'm all for "free at the point of use" healthcare, but don't think that the way the NHS works is necessarily the best organisation and use of resources (again from my wife's experience of over 35 years of working in it) and wouldn't care if it was provided by private companies from central funds ... as long as it was providing better service at no higher cost.

He has certainly been handed a poison chalice. It looks like a case of "You helped get us into this mess - so now it's your job to get us out."

While it might seem that he has been landed with an impossible task, in reality it probably won't be too arduous. For a start, according to his own predictions he has at least 40 years before he needs to show that we are finally enjoying the real benefits of Brexit - so in practice it could actually be a nice quiet job for life, with little need to show many signs of immediate success.

Depends on what you mean by substantially.

Why would they, everyone that was even average at anything goes to university for 3 years and most of those get a useless qualification in the 'arts & media' or history/geography and can;t get a job but they have a degree so after a a short crash course in managment they get highy paid jobs managing people that they have no idea how to do those jobs.

As a rough example our new labs have all been fitted out with LED tubes that auto switch off after ~15 mins of no movement or come on with movement. The comapny iistalling and maintaining them we have a 'special' deal with. We get free labour and only pay for parts. Great. So just before christmas something went wrong and the lights couldn't be turned off. We checked around and guessed that the lighting control box was at fault, which didn't have the flashing LEDs it previously had. So us technicains we came to the conclusion that this box was 'f***ed' and needed replacing. But the college didn't want to call out the engineers that gave free labour because the deal meant that a call out was £1000 per call out, so they waited until other things went wrong. Just before xmas they arrived, scratched their bum and said the control box is faulty and we don't have any instock. So everyday 7 days a week 24/7 since xmas all the lab lights have been on. No news on when the replacement box will arrive or when it'll be installed. I assume the college is waiting for other things to go wrong until they can justify spending £1,000 on a call out charge. But they'll fit the box for free, which should take about 10mins at most.

But it's fun trying to explain to lecturing staff when they ask how do we turn the lights off after we leave and we say you can't turn the lights off !.

And as for the ~100 PC's + 2nd monitor even though they are only used at most <50% of the time (9-5 M-F). But they are all ON 24/7 (365-xmas holidays). They can't even be put into sleep mode!

Then we have our green mary team asking us how we can cut down on our energy usage and save the planet from global warming.

Of course this has nothing to do with Brexit but unless you know what any deal is or consists of don;t assume that a deal is good/bad value just because you're told it is. :)

According to some MPs BJ has now taken to saying that "We got Brexit now and now we've got Covid done". I guess that's another 40+ years of Covid then :(

Wasn't just those considered unskilled. The carer looking after my mum. Carer and her husband (building site labourer) came to the UK (London) for 18 months to work, booked flights back and forth to romaina for school holidays so they flew back almost every 6-8 weeks for a week. as they left their children with their grandparents. During the 18 months thayt saved enough money for a house in romania. If you can get these semi-skilled to work for you for ~£11 or less an hour why not employ them. That way you don't even have to train them.

I also found it strange that almost any job could be sourced via this cheap labour method, except that of being a MP for some reason we were never allowed to vote on a MP that cost £11 and hour rather than £40 an hour strange that isn't it.
