to stop cheating

You'll have to give an example. I've seen plenty of reports of goods doing a circuit between EU countries giving rise to VAT fraud.

I think there was a hint that taxation might be avoided. To claim back your input tax you need to file the invoices (in case of inspection) which allows a check on your suppliers honesty. I had one inspection in 30 years of being registered for VAT.

We are rather a long way off d-i-y:-)

Traditional for farmers to try a bit of DIY on the tax system :)

PS Recall Sheep Dip in the accounts of farmers who never kept sheep?

If you do away with their ability to claim back VAT, you do away with an opportunity for fraud.

I'd say that clothing in general is essential - you'll soon be arrested if you go out without any!

No, fraud is still possible by claiming that it is a wholesale sales when it is in fact a retail sale.

But the most expensive fashion stuff that is only worn once, isnt.

Same with a hand made suit, jeans and a T shirt are all you need to not be arrested.

- you'll soon be arrested

Oh I agree, but we pay VAT on all of it - and that hand-made suit may be a work necessity ... you don't want to look cheap when making beig business deals.

You clearly didnt previously.

But he was proposing an alternative to the VAT.

No.

It doesnt have to be hand made to not look cheap.

Cash in hand a common route. Not unusual to find fuel tanks being dipped at markets and auctions.

I'd say there is a very good reason why the vast majority of similar countries use VAT rather than PT.

Perhaps. Upthread, someone pointed to US states retaining sales tax.

Would we have used VAT if current information systems were available in

1966 and it not required by the EU. >

Our entry into the EU predicated our adoption of VAT but amusingly when the kidnap victims of the Entebbe event asked their Israeli rescuers what if anything had happened in Israel during their incarceration. The reply was the introduction of VAT. :(

Alan

Not really sure what the US does is relevant. It has a very different taxation system to most. Which varies by state.

Quite possible that there is a better way than VAT these days. But PT isn't it.

But with current technology I'd like to investigate moving to direct taxation only. Indirect became popular (with governments) as being more difficult to fiddle.

Wasn't it the bigoted, racist traditional labour voters that voted for Brexit?

Theory and practice seldom meet. Often the theory relies a lot on the magic money tree.

No, they all voted remain. Because they all work in the public sector.

It was the free thinking entrepreneurial liberal progressive working class that voted for Brexit.

Certainly some of those did, but plenty of others who voted for brexit were traditional conservatives too.

And they didn't want their snouts to lose access to the biggest trough around.
