Quarries for Walling Stone / Near Macclesfield

Feb 25, 2005 2 Replies

Does anyone know of any good quarries for dressed or semi-dressed walling stone in the Macclesfield/Cheshire/Western Peak areas?

I am looking for sandstone in light pink through to buff colours.

I have tried a couple in Kerridge (Earl & Bridge) but the lead time for the stone is excessive for my small requirement.

TIA,

Alex

I visited a quarry, on the A6 just out of buxton, they let me fill the car with stones, for a donation to the christmas party fund. This was a couple of years ago.

Dressed stone is a different matter entirley, as somebody has to work on it, adding a huge additional cost.

By the football ground in Macc (go down the road next to the ground, follow the road, its behind bargin booze) is a salvage merchant, I was there last week, and they have piles of stone, it maybe worth a trip to see if they have what you want.

Rick,

Thanks ... I'll widen my search to Buxton,

Re: the salvage yard, I think you are talking about Cheshire Demolition, you're right its worth a look although I was there a month ago and nothing jumped out, but the stock changes all the time.

FYI ... there is also another yard down (the very bumpy) Turf Lane ("Hobsons") just before you reach Bargain Booze. That's worth a look if you are going to Cheshire Demolition anyway.

Alex.
