Plusnet dumping email service - Recommendations please

Plusnet has recently announced that it will be outsourcing its email service to some outfit called Greenby as from 14th July.

All Plusnet email mailboxes and Plusnet webspace will be migrated to Greenby and will - it is claimed - work exactly as before.

For email accounts associated with a current broadband account there will be no charge for the first two years - not guaranteed free after that.

For email accounts not associated with a current broadband account (e.g. where you've cancelled the BB but retained the email account) there will be a charge of £15 p.a. after the first month.

I've got one of the first type and a couple of the second type.

It seems like a good time to get my own domain plus an email service which is independent of any BB supplier - so that I would no longer be tied to Plusnet.

I'm looking for the most cost effective way of doing this. So I need a domain name and a reliable email service with (say) 20 mailboxes and preferably with spam filtering.

Recommendations - particularly from personal experience - will be very much appreciated.

+more, they are very good.

I am in a similar position to the OP - I have already migrated several email domains/accounts to Mythic Beasts, and am now moving the Plusnet/F9-specific accounts to the same place. The cost (for extra MB email space) is slightly cheaper when compared with what Plusnet are mentioning for Greenby, but I am much happier with my arrangement in any case. FWIW Plusnet email has been unreliable for a while now.

I am a little unclear how Plusnet plan to keep in touch with me when this change occurs...

Log in and go to your Manage Your Account page and change your contact email address…

I particularly appreciate:

I've been a Plusnet customer for broadband and e-mail for donkey's years and they haven't told me a dicky-bird about this. First I've heard of it.

Bob gave us early news abut it in plusnet.service.customer-feedback, they'll be emailing people as and when their turn comes ...

Due to the low volume of traffic in the feedback group, I only saw Bob’s post a few days ago. I’d have to say that there are people all over Usenet who are complaining about what is now short notice to get things changed, if that’s the route they want to go for instead of the Greenby migration.

I’ve always used different suppliers for email and Usenet, so this change won’t affect me, but plenty of people seem rather put out by it.

I guess there will be further complaints when the migration email goes out…

Same here. In particular I have already got a separate email contact address so that messages from them such as monthly account statements go to both addresses, but they have sent me nothing on this to either address.

They emailed me about one of my email accounts which isn't linked to a PN BB account. I guess that they're telling such customers first because the change will incur almost immediate additional charges. They haven't contacted me about my main BB account.

Once I was alerted, I looked on their website for further information. I suggest that you do the same.

So let the Greenby migration happen, then they have two years to move it somewhere else, before they start getting charged ...

This wasn't I wrote the above ... but amusingly/annoyingly, for some reason I am unable to access my 'Manage Your Account' page on Plusnet - it redirects to a general status page. Multiple support calls have been made regarding this but no-one seems to be able to fix it.

It seems to be related to the age of my account (eg. when it was F9). I will probably have to raise this again with them...

Could it be to do with cookies? Have to tried to access it using a different browser?

Hi, The fact is that you are being migrated from your Plusnet included email service, which is free, to what is to become "Within two years", a paid service, which means that apart from collecting your login details and passwords of your now Plusnet mail accounts, you are expected to pay to supply a very long list of information to your new mail service, in this case Tucows alias Enix alias HostPresto! alias greenby. The fact is that your mail is hosted (if you transfer) to HostPresto!. Greenby Ltd. is the front end, the fixers and is based in a private house.

HostPresto! I should imagine, also host domains.

Greenby isn't a limited company, it's a trading name of Enix limited.

4500 Parkway, Solent Business Park doesn't sound, or look much like a house to me.

I've just gone into my Mailbox management portal on my Plusnet online account, (and you're transported back about 20 years, as far as look and feel is concerned)

I can't find any option to kill my email account stone dead ? (which I'd like to do, given the impending changes)

PN have said that affected customers will be sent an email setting out the choices and how to opt out. I haven’t yet seen any reports of said email being received.
