OT nearly at 'so long and thanks for the fish'

I have been using this newsgroup for over twent years, most recently via Google groups. It has now got to the stage were I am about to abandon it. I have read about other souces of news groups that can be accessed via Thunderbird, can somoen please advise and help.With many thanks, Jonathan

it's definitely the answer, well known issue between thunderbird and eternal-september.

When you set the news reader to always authenticate the rest of the groups are allowed BUT they are not new groups from the server's point of view so they won't appear until you force TB to get them. To do that click (or use the keyboard to select)

+1 for Eternal September which I've used for several/many years (since news.individual.net stopped being free - yes I'm a cheapskate) and I still use a very old version of Free Agent which works fine on Win10 and I prefer to Thunderbird despite the lack of rules capability.
