OT - Digital camera and a Currys warranty

Hey, I have a pinhole camera I made as a boy and it still takes beautiful p ictures.

I wouldn't agree that DSLRS plateaued 8-9 years ago. The pixel war may be l ong dead but there are still improvements being made to the chips. Low ligh t ability has come on in leaps and bounds. Colour rendition is improved. Camera size has reduced. The Sony 7 series offer full frame capabilities in a remarkably small body and the Fuji and Olympus small sensor cameras are excellent devices. Panasonic introduced the LX100 at Photokina and to the o ld style photographer it would definitely be a must have with its controls similar to the older rangefinders.

There is no arguing that older digital cameras can still take photos but th ere certainly have been improvements in camera design over the last 9-10 ye ars.

Not saying there hasn't been, but my point is - prior to ~10 years ago, every year saw another leap forward, since then, not so much per annum. The overall progress of course, is huge, but it's been fairly gradual.

Not really a plateau then.

8-9 years ago it was all about more and more pixels. That nonsense has stop ped. Now we have annual refinements in most models and lots of great improv ements.

EVFs have improved in quality. Rear screens have increased in size and qual ity. Personalisation of the knobs and switches is fairly ubiquitous now. Mo re iris leaves for improved bokeh are becoming more popular.

I'm sure I've missed items but in general I feel we have had lots of genuin e improvements in the last 10 years. Sufficient to make 10 year old models out of date. This is not saying they cant take good pictures. That's down t o the man pressing the button anyway.

only £320, so if the 700D did fail them a secondhand one could be a good deal. Of course if you lose the camera you'll likely lose the lens too. But if the camera is faulty keep the lens and buy a new or secondhand body.

It would have leapt farther if they didn't keep adding pixels. You can load better software o some cameras to do binning and stuff like that if its low light performance you want.

So is the 40D *on* the plateau? Are previous versions below it? SWMBO wants me to buy an SLR and she won't know how up to date it is :-)

First, be sure that a DSLR is what you want. Then visit specialist camera retailers if possible. I am fairly fortunate in having some to choose from locally;

Don't buy an SLR because they are "better", CSCs are pretty much as good and are easier to carry around.

A point and shoot (which I use most days) is fine for me, but her indoors seems to want to lug gear about in a case. Give her 3 months and it'll all be in a drawer somewhere anyway. Hence she can have a 40D, but nothing newer :-)
