Is there an efficient way to get rid of these numpties who have taken to posting on the group? The problem with 'author' is that the author may change. Do they all come from one service that can be blocked, for example?

Thunderbird's "Create filter from message" option (under "Messages") works well and only requires two mouse-clicks.
How does it cope with individuals who regularly change their names?
For the benefit of those running Thunderbird, from previous advice posted by another contributor:
In the group of interest, go to Tools > Message Filters > New
Select Newsgroups in the first drop-down box, Select contains in the second drop-down box, put a comma in the third drop-down box, Select Delete Message in the lower window click OK.
In the Filters list box,click on Run Now.
This deletes all the crossposts, which will get rid of most of the loony messages.
Use a few of the keywords that they invariably put in the Subject. Or add custom fields to the filter against like Newsgroups
Culling anything cross posted into alt.* or talk.* works for me.
Unfortunately wildcards are something that TB doesn't do ( Ihave tried various addins and none of them work) so I have to make do with :
Newsgroups: _contains_ " alt." _or_ _contains_ " talk."
If anyone does know of a wildcard addin that works in TB I'm all ears!
There are a number of answers - and they vary depending on the nature of the drooling retard you are dealing with. I am not familiar with ForteAgent, so can't give you specific instructions.
Blocking cross posts to multiple groups or groups to which you don't subscribe will kill many.
I use a method like this:

Normally with a rule that looks for any message with a "," in the Newsgroups header (this will only appear when there is more than one group). The action set to "delete message". Then I place another higher priority filter before it that looks for specific groups that I do read, and if it sees any of those it has an action of "stop filter execution". So basically kill any cross posted message unless it includes groups I am interested in.
For the posters that use anonymous remailers, then it is easier to simply block all remailers:

Then for your basic oxygen thief like speed and his socks / acolytes, your common or garden kill list of email addresses is usually adequate. When he pops up with a new nym, just add it to the list of a "match any of the following" filter list. Click the "run now" button, and he vanishes again.
Lastly you have the generally non offensive but waste of space posters, like david p, for those I have a "mark as read" filter, that lets you easily skip over them.
Sometimes the "deny by default" approach is easier - kill *all* cross-posts, unless they match the groups you are interested in.
I've kf'd anything cross posted or come from gmail. Agent will kf cross posts. Mine is V4, v8 may have more features.

In thundebird I've set up 3 filters
Delete if any Newgroup contains talk.politics Delete if any Newsgroup contains free.spam Delete if any article body contains troll
In thunderbird some of the filters stop the download rather than being able to act on what has already been downloaded.
Probably on your newsreader there may be a filter option to delete posts that have been cross posted to more than one group.
No many are injected via google. I tend to block the well known ones and some of the key words in their subject lines and as long as nobody with no kill file does not post a followup and the sub lines are not there, then it never gets here. Brian

Adding the "," to prevent cross-posing gets rid of most of the trouble.
I also find KillFiling anyone that innanely or regularly responds to anyone already killfiled is a particularly effective way of reducing pointless background noise; besides which anyone that feels they need to continue a dialogue with such individuals typically has very little to contribute anyway. So no loss there.
Also adding a filter for posts with "OT:" in the subject works well. ;)

Well, OK... two clicks per occasion!
Much easier to target a few of their favourite unique keywords in the Subject line and that works whatever sock puppet name they post from.
Cross-posting is the easiest thing to check that will catch a lot of the s*it.
As filters go, that is an exceptionally effective filter.

I take it that you are not into Tolkien then.
Article body is quite big and expensive to search.
Better to target a few keywords in the subject header. eg. " kike ", " paedo " and " shpam" ought to do it (with minimal collateral damage)
Also delete if Newsgroup contains " alt.", " talk." or " soc." will get rid of most of the crap that the miscreant(s) are cross posting here.
The leopard may change his email address but inevitably posts the same old crap with predictable keywords in the subject header. Every now and then the odd new one gets through my filters.
Sadly not an option that TB really supports.
You can kill on all cross posts by Newsgroups list contains ", " [but you have to customise and add that field manually]
Wildcards is the one thing that I really miss in TB coming from Turnpike.
I used to wonder whether his postings were automated.
Ex Demon, ex Turnpike user here. There were a lot of features in Turnpike that are missing from the alternatives.
The evidence of his comments on my posts at unusual for me time of day proves that it isnt automated.
Interesting how pathetic its existence is.
