Iphone new battery

I was having an issue with my Iphone suddenly having zero battery, despite full charge, then lasting all day sometimes - all fixed with a new OEM battery.

My noral use is for it to be on its charge stand most of the time, only taken off when I go out. I understand this treatment is not good for the battery, so I am looking at alternative methods...

I could power the USB charger via a Smart Plug, set to come on for an hour per day, but phone use is variable, so might not be enough some days. Ifeal would be for Alexa to turn the plug on when capcaity fell to 70% off at 100% - is there any way I could do that, or any better ideas please?

Do you have Optimised Battery Charging turned on? It's intended for this kind of usage. It tries to learn your habits and not keep the phone for long times at high SOC.

That's roughly what this does:

Basically there's an app that waits until the battery charges to xx% and then sends a Bluetooth message to the supplied dongle to cut the charging power. It's a crude solution to a problem that phone vendors could solve in software, but there you are.

Your phone should be able to overlook that, charging only when it thinks it's necessary. It knows more about the charge / cycle state than you do.

Buy a replacement iPhone battery from iFixit. That's what I did a few years ago, and my iPhone SE is still holding good charge, working I think better than the Apple original.

It's not an original part (not that you can get original parts anyway), and certainly not an OEM (as Apple would crucify them). But iFixit has a good rep, so £30 went flying their way.

I wasted time changing an iPhone battery for a neighbour with a cheapie bought from eBay, it didn't fix their charging problems.

It aims to charge the phone to 80% and then top it up to 100% when it reckons you're going to need it. It's based on the idea that people plug in the phone at bedtime and want to use it the next morning. A normal charge would have it fast charging to be full after an hour and then sit at 100% SOC for most of the night, which is wearing on the battery. Instead it 'learns' that you typically remove the phone from charge at 7am and so keeps it at 80% until 6am and then starts charging the last 20% then. (Made up numbers for this example) The idea is that the phone will be at 100% when you wake up, but in the middle of the night it'll charge slower.

If your habits are more unpredictable that I suppose it doesn't do a good job, and maybe the fallback when it doesn't know is to fast charge to 100% like it does without the feature enabled.

Iphones are supposed to intelligently charge. IE not fully charge all the time and manage the speed if its getting low and warn you, but I believe the later models had this future optional in settings, might be worth checking if its turned on, as I find it pretty good on my 10R, which still has its original battery and is still fine.

The phone was bought as a 'refurb' a few years ago, when my first Iphone needed a new battery. That one behaved very predictably.

This one simply behaved unpredicatably, dead when taken off charge sometimes, lasting easily for the full day at others.

Rather than fit the battery myself, I took it to an independant specialist and asked if they did OEM batteries - it took one out to show me in an Apple box. The new battery is certainly living upto my expectations and some.

I think that's what most people do - it's the most convenient.

There is a school of thought that suggests it's not best to keep it in the bedroom while you're sleeping - never bothered me.
