How to fix 30mm hole in plasterboard?

It's too small to poke a piece of wood through and screw into that through the plasterboard.

I tried some scrunched up newspaper, but it just drops down.

Any clever ideas, please?

Cut your hole slightly larger with straight edges cut on a bevel (PB saw or a multitool will do it. Then cut a plug the same size with matching bevelled edges. Apply adhesive/filler around the edge, an put the plug in place. Set the final level either slightly low and then fill over, or set flush with a straight edge and just fill the small gap.

Make the hole bigger? Perhaps a rectangular shape, so that you can insert a piece of wood, held by a screw through its centre, turn it once through the hole, and then screw into it through the plasterboard.

Cut a repair piece to fit the hole, squirt in expanding foam, then hold the repair piece in place as the foam tries to escape from the hole? The foam ought to expand sideways instead and also hold the repair piece in place.

For a ceiling he should cut the bevel the other way. The bevelled insert piece will fit through the square hole at 45 degrees and will then just sit (snugly) into place under the influence of gravity. Put a line of nonails around the edge of the insert and make a small hole in the centre with a piece of knotted string to gently pull it down to spread the nonails.

Probably ok if you temporarily stick a dry lining screw into the plug so that you have a handle on it.

It seemed all wrong to make a small hole big, but this worked very nicely, thanks. :)

cut a longer narrow piece of plasterboard ,screw a long screw into centre of it slop some plaster on it and insert at an angle through hole and pull back against back of wall, it will dry and you can fill with small piece

Glad one of my random thoughts proved useful.

...and send us pics of the damage.

Expanding foam only causes damage if it is prevented from expanding, which shouldn't be a problem in a plasterboard wall or ceiling.

Drill a 40mm hole over the top?

Yup. But might be easier to enlarge the hole to a square. Making cutting the infill patch easier.
