That eats nitrile, though, which is possibly the most likely seal material. See the link I posted earlier.

So oddly enough I have now got most of it off with WD40 and a scourer !!! It is now at least vaguely working. Thanks all for your suggey

If it's just stuck in a thick hard layer to the outside of the needle try tapping it with a hammer (resting on something hard and heavy like a bench vice). Or nipping it with some good pliers. I had a "hardly used" eBay bargain spray gun that was thoroughly gummed with very hard varnish, and it just came away cleanly in a few pieces. If it's on the /inside/ of anything try noxious chemicals or heat.
