I'm surprised that they were still available in 2009.

That's about when I bought mine and I bought the successor model 9150T which was far from perfect

(as isn't my HDR 1010S)

It was factory reconditioned or something similar like shop soiled, but direct from Humax and guaranteed until point of failure. :-)

Introduced in 2005, I believe, with several software upgrades since.

I've got a Humax HD - part of a BT package so was cheap. I did like my old Toppy, though, as someone had always written software for it to do what you actually wanted. Dunno why they are no more.

Commercial software writers seem to aim for a pretty looking GUI? rather than the most efficient sort.

Our YourView Box bought without ?tie? rather than via BT or other ISP is manufactured by Humax and has proved very reliable. The only niggles was after a software update awhile back and I had to get used to the various programmes and recordings being displayed with a small picture Icon rather than just text so you have to do more scrolling and the bottom of the screen is obscured when you wind back a live recording by the programme name And progress bar indicator , often the reason I have wound back is to look at something again that is right where it is now obscured.

I got a TopField after my Pace Twin (which when it was introduced was a remarkable device) got obsolete, But to get the best out of a Toppy you had to tinker with it which you may have enjoyed doing but wasn?t that friendly out of the box for those who just wanted to turn on an item of consumer equipment and watch telly. Then those that had bought them found that Topfield had cut corners on the power supply or quality control of components in it and they failed with duff capacitors after to short a time, easy to repair if you had the skill and there were repair kits on the market but mending your own AV gear isn?t normally considered by the average family man/ woman. So they bought a more well known brand instead to replace it. Meanwhile a lot of the features that people wrote into software for the Toppy have become available on other brands or the same result achieved by using equipment connected to broadband, if you have a good enough connection there is less need now to record things as it is easier to use one of the on demand services.

TopField seemed to lose interest in the UK market around the time many people were upgrading to HD ,maybe the importer gave up with lack of support. It looks like Turbosat is still around in name but none trading,they don?t seem to have web site.

Really? I'll often record something like the news if it clashes with something I'm watching. And can then watch it from the start immediately I want to - even if it's still being transmitted. Rather than the 'coming soon' on demand.

Yes really, I said less need not none at all. News is a good candidate to set for regular recording as it is enough to watch or delete as required. And the on demand services have a lot of programming that is available the moment it is transmitted and in many case you can view programs before their scheduled transmission. Others will have been been shown before and I haven?t noticed them but that they can be watched from the EPG before another scheduled transmission can be quite useful. An example is tonight the schedule shows something called The City and the City at 9pm. The EPG shoes a play arrow and pressing means that if I wished I could watch it now

What is a useful feature on the BBC that arrived sometime a while back is if you come across a programme that strikes ones interest but it is part way through pressing the red button gives the option to watch it from the beginning,though I think it will only go back a maximum of two hours,but not that many programmes are that long. This is using a Humax YouView Box, no idea if other equipment is set up for it.

Our FVP-4000T is not perfect, but then again the SKY box that it replaced needed rebooting every now and again too.

Latest software update has removed a few niggles - not faults as such, more irritations in usage (such as previously not being able to read the description of a programme that had already started without switching to it).
