I threw a satellite card in the back of my server and plugged its video into HDMI.

It is now a full blown X windows Linux computer with a remote mouse and keyboard running Kaffeine to watch the telly.

The freeness or non freeness is down to descrablming stuff in the sky box I guess. In my case a PCI card gets all the (free) channels

We have recently bought a LG TV with built in Freesat as well as Freeview. Just plugged in the lead from the old redundant sky dish and we now have far more channels than we will ever watch.

In another room we have a Humax PVR also using the old sky dish and the only time I've noticed poor reception is when the pear tree needed pruning!

Never did quite understand Freesat. It appears to be nothing more than a favourites list you could set up on any decent receiver.

It's only a 7 day EPG. Necessary for the operation of many PVRs. The broadcasters pay to have their programs listed this way.

What you are receiving is the signal transmitted from the Astra 2G satellite which was used by both FreeSat and Sky and others who know how to find in the clear stations on the equipment they have. You will be one of the latter. It has left Freesat and no longer appears on their EPG as Channel 4 found increased charges excessive .

You have made the mistake of thinking Astra and Freesat are the same thing.

I only have LNBs on 19.2E and 28.2E so can't check, but I think you're mistaken about 23.5E ... nothing I can see says Channel4 is carried there (either SD or HD).

All I know is that kaffeine had entries for 3 Astra satellites in the generally useful bit of sky the dish was pointing at all of which seemed to have free TV and radio, as well as scrambled Sky and Bt s*it

I settled in 23.5E as that seemed to have slightly better reception and maybe more channels.

Although I have a quad LNB only one is in use, and thats ASTRA 23.5E

Anyway Channel 4 HD is available free on whatever it is I am tuned to.

I dont want to argue from ignorance: I just have free C4 in HD and thats what the software says.

Furher to this, I managed to download a PDF from Astra that suggest that channel (channel 4 london HD) and frequency are in fact on Astra 2G (28.2E...)

I think you software thinks your dish is pointed at 25E3 when in reality it's pointed at 28E2, the frequency and service ID is correct for Ch4HD on Astra2G, you'd need an extra LNB on an arm and a DiSEqC switch (or at least a dual tuner) to receive from two satellites.

If you gave it the initial tuning file for the "wrong" satellite, it would likely bump into a transponder on one of the same frequencies/polarisations for the "right" one and then get data about the other transponders from there and be none the wiser.

Oh. I think I can see what is going on.

There are a few channels free to air from, 'Freesat' but all the REST of the free to air are 'Sky'.

So to summarise:

Atsra 2G at 28.2E carries a few 'Freesat' free channels and a lot of 'Sky' free channels. CH4 London HD is in the 'Sky' free to air package.

Yeah, basically the three Astra satellites at 28.2E carry a shitload of channels, some are encrypted and only in Sky's EPG, others are free to air and in both Sky and Freesat's EPG, some (like C4HD) are free to air but only in Sky's EPG (because C4 have thrown their toys out at Freesat's charges) I dare say there are a handful that are in neither EPG.
