Why not buy a second hand ambulance, lots of space!

And they have a nicer ride than vans. Softer suspension at the back. And the blue flashing light is useful in heavy traffic.

Aaah, the student dream from the early 70s. I looked at them again not so long ago - the ones at auction are very high mileage and the fuel consumption would be a little painful.

Why would an ambulance have a worse fuel consumption than any other 'box' on a similar 'chassis'? (Yes, I know they're not really chassis based now, even ambulances).

Beware ambulances might be registered above 3.5 tonne on the VIN plate, you'd need grandfathered 7.5 tonne on your licence, or take test for higher category ...

ISTR my late father in law's had an engine built by Rolls Royce. Modern ones may have larger, or second alternators to provide more electrical power. But apart from that, I tend to agree that they must be built on "normal" commercial vehicles.

If you're over 70 you'll lose the 7.5 on your licence unless you take (and pass) a medical, every three years from 70 onwards. There can only be a few people left now in the <70 years old but still have 7.5 tonne (my wife is one, but she's 68 now, so not long).

Oh, I'm surprised it was that recent. My daughter of 42 doesn't have it. My son of 44 has a full HGV 1 and 2 so it has passed him by! :-)

TBH I was surprised myself by what I am permitted to drive. Some years ago I called a hire co and told them I wanted something with a 1 ton tail lift and when I went to pick it up I said "Surely I can't drive that!", but apparently I could. I forget what it was but it was a great big lump. Air brakes, no seatbelts, dog slow. Didn't enjoy it.

I got it fixed up to drive and MOTed a couple of years back and then the battery went flat. I am busy fitting a new battery this week to try and move it again, clean it up and maybe get it MOTed.

Its based on a 2 litre petrol Peugeot Boxer chassis. - does about 19mpg

- and is officially a five berth, Suits two + pets very well
