EDF Energy Easy Online tariff and smart meters and SMETS1/2

Jan 16, 2019 Last reply: 7 years ago 6 Replies

I used a switching site (Money Saving Expert if I remember correctly) to switch suppliers to a 2 year fixed deal.

Just had a phone call which tells me that I MUST have a smart meter fitted in the next 6 weeks. That this is part of the terms and conditions of the Easy Online tariff.

Also, the meter is SMETS1 but will be magically updated later to SMETS2.

Had I been aware of the requirement I wouldn't have signed up.

Anyone else come across this?

I will be asking Money Saving Expert about this as well.

Cheers

It is in the T&C ...

SIGNING UP FOR THIS TARIFF MEANS YOU AGREE TO: Having a Smart meter installed by us, when we?re installing them in your area.

If you don't want one, I suppose you'd have to leave and pay their £30 per fuel exit fee.

Yes in that I read the T&Cs and they had that requirement in them.

If your question is whether it's a fair condition then I'm inclined to say yes. Smart meters save the supplier the cost of meter readers so they can argue the tariff reflects that and can't be afforded without the savings. Ofgem recognise this in their guidance. Eg

"Choosing not to have a smart meter may mean you don?t have access to all the available tariffs on the market, some of which could be cheaper."

But you need to ask someone who really knows their consumer protection law and point to exactly what you were shown if you want to argue you were misled in some way.

When I've read the T&C of similar offers if you refuse the meter they put you on their standard tarrif. Alternatively you can leave paying any early leaving fee.

Yes - totally missed that when we signed up.

Looks like there is little choice because it is a reasonably good deal, and smart meters may be pointless but they aren't (yet) actively harmful as far as I know.

Put this one down to experience.

No, in fact EDF told me that until they have an accessible remoteunit they cannot offer me a smart meter.

I'm on the blue though so maybe they are losing money on the one you are on. Also of course I'm single fuel and they seem not too interested in us. Brian

Check out Bulb. Low prices and they pay any exit fees.
