Ministers stop the roll out of new smart meters to some homes near RAF Fylingdales

RAF Fylingdales detects ballistic missiles across a 3,000-mile radius Nuclear missile early warning systems are at risk of interference from the roll out of smart meters, forcing energy bosses to halt installations across parts of Yorkshire, The Telegraph can reveal.



People living near RAF Fylingdales have been refused the upgrade because smart meter signals may clash with its ballistic missiles radar equipment.



Crewed by Royal Air Force staff on the North York Moors, Fylingdales scours the skies for ballistic missiles across a 3,000-mile radius, providing data to the US government to warn of an impending strike on America.



It is understood that the radio frequencies smart meters use to send data usage to suppliers has proven problematic because it is too close to those used by Fylingdales, formerly home to famous ?golf ball? radar domes. They were demolished after the end of the cold war and replaced with pyramid structures.



Ministers have stopped the roll out to some homes within the North York Moors National Park until they can be kitted out with a new type of smart meter that can operate on the 454MHz frequency instead of the standard 422-424MHz band used by most smart meters.



A letter from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, sent to some households late last year and seen by The Telegraph said: ?Some premises within the vicinity of RAF Fylingdales will require new technology that industry has been developing ? a special type of communications hub ? for smart meters at those properties to connect to the national smart metering network.?



The Telegraph revealed this month how new powers for the energy regulator will allow smart meters to send information about usage to suppliers every 30 minutes by default. The plans are part of preparations for so-called surge pricing, whereby electricity prices vary according to demand. Ministers are pursuing the technology to help manage the load on the grid as Britain increasingly depends on variable renewable power and electric vehicles.



Such changes prepare the ground for households to potentially pay more during the busiest periods, raising the prospect of being penalised for using the washing machine or charging gadgets in the mornings or evenings.



While in most parts of the country smart meters are being heavily marketed, in the area around Fylingdales those who do want one are being refused.



One consumer living close to the RAF Fylingdales base posted on a forum hosted by the Money Saving Expert website: ?SMETS2 smart meters are simply not available to me because they operate at a radio frequency which will cause interference with an RAF airbase, RAF Fylingdales.



"All the potential energy suppliers just say ?No; you are ineligible for a SMETS2 smart meter? and leave it at that.?



The government said alternative smart meter technology compatible with RAF Fylingdales is being rolled out to nearby households, with a test deployment to 300 homes currently under way.



Mike Hewitt, the chief technology officer of Smart DCC, the Capita-owned company which runs the smart meter radio network, added: ?This work around RAF Fylingdales is a good example of the kind of technical problem-solving needed to connect every home and small business to the nationwide secure smart metering network.



"I?m pleased that by working with the local community and our partners, we?ve built a solution that works for consumers in the area and the RAF.?



"Hundreds of premises near Fylingdales have already been connected? with the new smart meter tech," he added.

As in sigfox? Doubt it, it uses 868-878 MHz band.

Ah well, this is not only going to be smart meters, but 5g and all sorts of other services as the various underused uhf bands fill up with digital signals. Sorry but electronic pollution is a fact of life everywhere. Brian

Had a very memorable visit to Fylingdales in the 1970's, going inside the control room and one of the domes with the dishes moving (but the radar turned off, of course). The radar dish mechanics was very impressive indeed. The RAF team in the control room had something of the "Peter Sellers" pilot from Dr. Strangelove.

They showed us an American film of a test simulation of an attack at an American site, and then did the same thing on site after talking to the desk guy in Cheyenne Mountain. This involved feeding a faked set of radar echoes straight into the horn. The American film was accompanied by a slow, laconic drawl that, at its high point, said "We are now entering an extreme tactical situation". In the local simulation, the actual dialogue went from "It looks like a raid" to "Yes, yes, it's definitely a raid!" with the crew jumping around in some state of excitement which, I am sure, was not put on especially for us.

It would be worse if it caused the smartmeter to add extra charges.

I thought smart meters only used the cellphone network. Why do they use

400-odd MHz? What's it for?

They do in southern england and wales

Northern england and scotland use a private arqiva data collection network on

412-424 MHz, basically DNOs numbered 15-18 plus 23 on this map

Additionally they can use 2.4GHz or 868 MHz within the house for the display, or mesh communication

That does seem to confirm 453-455 MHz is special for near filindales

I'm a bit surprised that their newish phased array radar can be so easily blinded by a stationary local signal even if it is almost in band. Mentioning this quirk in the open literature makes it all too obvious to an adversary how to blind the entire system!

And the sort of sabotage that might be expected if an adversary was about to make a hostile move with ICBMs.

They spend most of their time cataloguing space junk so that it doesn't come as a surprise if one should re-enter the Earth's atmosphere.

It does seem an obvious flaw.

I suspect what hasn't been considered that remote hostile control of these gadgets could render our ICBM detection system useless.

I imagine they basically want a clear view between the dish and the sea. Should an interferer emerge I imagine they would be able to RDF it pronto and send somebody to 'have words'.

Having every house legally chattering away in-band is something else!

Not that it will necessarily blind the radar, but you'd rather not take risks when detecting a nuclear attack...

True. Takes away another incentive for somebody to mess with them.

Or maybe there a) is no problem with those particular frequencies and it is intended as disinformation for potential enemies or b) there are alternate operating modes, that they are saying nothing about.

presumably older SMETS1 meters everywhere use mobile networks, it's just the newer SMETS2 meters that can use arqiva ...
