Ebay

Anyone had dealings with the new Ebay payments?

Before, if I sold anything, I'd get an email from Ebay saying it was sold. And a confirmation from Paypal that it had been paid for. Pretty well instantly.

Ebay are now set meant to pay direct into my bank account. I think.

Sold an expensive item on Sunday. No emails of any sort confirming it - but have had other routine emails from Ebay since.

Buyer is champing at the bit for the goods, says he paid by Paypal, but neither my bank account or Paypal one shows this credit. Seems he was told it would be late getting to my bank account due to the bank holiday - but just checked and no credits there.

I'm obviously not releasing the goods until I know I've been paid. But do feel for the buyer who I'm pretty certain is genuine.

You can hopefully relieve his anxiety that you are also genuine.

Watch out for chancers turing up at the door to try and collect the goods in person. If they don't hand over readies at the same time, do not under any circumstances hand the stuff over.

If you don't sell often, ebay hold your payment in escrow. If the transaction goes according to plan, they release the payment in (I think) 21 days. If the buyer complains they didn't receive the goods, they weren't as described, or whatever, ebay may not release the money until the situation is resolved. This protects against dodgy sellers who take the money and run.

If the transaction shows as sold in your ebay account, with the buyer's details etc, then you should send the item. You won't get the money until the buyer receives the goods and they haven't complained.

I've not had that before.

If that is now how Ebay works, I'm certainly not releasing the goods. They are not being sent, but being collected.

Just to add, I've not had an email from Ebay saying they are sold, or one saying they've been paid for. Looking on 'my Ebay' it does say the funds have been made available.

With Paypal, IIRC they did hold on to any credit for a while. But showed it in your transaction page.

Ebay are also making a vast amount of money from this sale. I'd expect some form of service for that amount.

In that case you could ask him to cancel the payment and pay in cash. That also avoids the scam already mentioned whereby someone collects then tells eBay they never received the item.

Or if the sum is too great for someone to risk coming to your home could you meet him an a public place - e.g. a bank?

The thing we sold took 3 days to show in the bank account although we were told it was paid and to despatch it. Mebbe teething troubles thoughn Paypal was quicker. Ebay taking 12.8% + 30p so seems a bit dearer than paypal

It's not, it's fractionally cheaper.

Ebay are discontinuing the use of paypal and moving to bank payments, I think there will be many issues with it especially for smaller private sellers. Over the years I have inherited 4 ebay accounts with 3 paypal accounts, (wifes and sons who have left the nest) I now have to give bank details for all 4 accounts which because of same bank accounts will probably mean I get some accounts shut down. I am sure ebay have their reasons but they appear to make changes that dont suit the majority of sellers and they dont listen to their customers.

That's what worries me. If you send an item, at least you can have proof it was delivered. If collected, it would simply be 'he said she said'

I'd far rather have a credit transfer than cash. Knowing my luck cash would be forgeries. ;-)

Did you get email confirmation from Ebay? I've not had any - not even one saying the item sold. Which is what worries me.

'My Ebay' page does say to dispatch it or whatever.

Perhaps I'm odd, but if the deal is I collect goods from a shop etc (click and collect) I expect to have paid for them before being allowed to take them away.

The ebay app has a barcode scan thingy for collections - you present the barcode on your app, the buyer scans it on their app, that records it as a successful collection, not unlike a courier scan.

If you don't have the app maybe there's a way you can print out the barcode or something.

Or, as mentioned, refund and do it in cash.

Interesting - not heard of that. I'll investigate.

That would save the vast commission. ;-)

I've just had an email from Ebay. Saying I'll have the funds in my account in 0-4 days. So could be a week between the seller paying and me getting the money. Bet it leaves his bank account a lot quicker. ;-)

I've Googled managed payments. Lot and lots of moans about how slow it is.

It takes longer over the weekend, and another day if there's a bank holiday. (I sold something yesterday and I'll get the money (£10.16) in my bank tomorrow. With Paypal it would have sat in my account until I used it to pay for something, or until I'd accumulated £50 and initiated a transfer.)

I haven't had problems receiving notification emails from eBay, and have sometimes had messages to say that an item has sold 'and' I've been paid, ie two functions in one message. To check the status of any sale click on the sell button, top r/h of My eBay. Then check the status of your orders on the Seller Hub. It'll tell you what's awaiting payment and what's awaiting despatch (because it's been paid). And you you can see what's due to you under the payments heading. Don't know how any of this works, if it does, on a phone.

Yes many make a career out of being genuine sounding. I'm not saying this has not been cocked up, just that the odds, at the moment are that you are being scammed, sad to say, its the nature of the beast. Brian

But I thought this was paypal? Anyway, I thought that from what th e original message said that it was marked as sold. Brian

I see, like it or not then I think you need to send the stuff. That is not what I had assumed from your original message. I guess if you are Ebay, you can't possibly win, but their system should, in my view send you an email to say funds have been made available instead of you having to pokke about to find the message online.

I don't get the difference between being sent or being collected, assuming a carrier you will get a proof of it being taken and with the guy at the other end you should hear when its got there, lost inbetween is always a bit of chaos even with any system of remote selling as when nobody has anything the carriers collection records should mean their insurance pays up to the buyer. Turned out to be just the new Ebay payments I was unfamiliar with. They were collected Thursday, and rather unusually got a phone call from the buyer this morning saying he was delighted with them.
